I'm getting ready to reclaim a section of my pasture by trying to level the old dirt road. It's mostly loose sand and is pretty uneven. A neighbor suggested I use a disc to do the main work and then smooth with a blade. I'll using my MF 1540, 40HP. Be advised I know nothing about tractors or farming.
1. Is the "disc" what I need to start?
2. What size can my 1540 handle (4' & 6' available)?
3. Can someone give me a basic explanation of how this operation works?

Thanks,
Gary

Are you talking about a disc turning plow or disc harrows? Seems like you could use spring tooth harrows or "scarfiers" to bust the ground up to smooth it. The scarfiers would even plow a little deeper and also rke up sticks, grass, and debris.

If the ground is really hard and compacted, a small disc is not going to do anything. A big heavy farming disc would, but more than likely a small one will just glide across the surface. You need either a small chisel plow with 3 or 4 shanks to bust it up, and then disc, and then blade, or better yet just get a box blade with scarifers. Use the scarifers to bust up the ground and then level it out with box blade.

I think a box blade with rippers would work just fine. You need to break up all the ground around the depressions and then patch them. Learning how to angle the box blade with the toplink is the hardest part to get right, and that's not hard.

If you have to, rip up the whole road, then raise the rippers and use the inside and outside blades to level it all. Try to build up the middle a little more (crown) so that water runs off. Cut some ditches beside it if there aren't any.

It's mostly loose sand that has been pushed up over the years while the road was an easement. It runs through the middle of my 6 acre hay field (which we'd like start getting our hay from). I've rerouted the road to run along the tree line and I want to level out the old road.

To clarify things; what I'm trying to do is make the old dirt road, pasture again.

My vote is for the box blade. With your sandy soil it should be easy work to level the area out.
