Post Hole digger won\'t go deep enough???

I have a Worksaver posthole digger and due to the geometry of my Yanmar 1602D, I can only dig a hole about 36"deep. I took a look at setup, there appears to be a couple of different solutions.
1. Build a new plate(s) to hold the top link to the tractor that is taller, moving the tractor end of the lever vertically 6" or more. There is lots of room for this, and I belive that the mounting point can be built with sufficient strength.
2. Make an adapter to extend the length of the post hole digger.
3. Add holes to the lower link arms to lower the digger. I don't think that enough depth is available through this method.

Any other solutions, advice,.......

Thanks,
Rob

If you decide on option #2, Bush Hog and others make 8" and 12" extensions for the augers; i.e., you can buy instead of make adapters if you wish.

that's a great solution. that's why I like to ask the board for advice, someone always has a solution.

anyone else?

Do augers fit universal to all PHD's? I have PHD from TSC, and they only sell up to 12" auger, I might need 18" soon.

Is it feasible to use a PHD to drill a water well? It seems that you could just add extension after extension, but perhaps this isn't practical?

Re: Post Hole digger won\'t go deep enough???

I looked locally for an extension, but none available. If I ordered one, the shipping cost to get in less than 5 weeks would nearly doubled the price.
I went to HD and bought 2 length of pipe, 2 in and 1.5 in and made my own. Hardest part was drilling the holes in the pipes.
Wife and I augered 9 holes 64 inches deep.

I can think of a few problems..

After you get extensions down into the hole, the dirt will not come up on it's own anymore. Well rigs use a combination of water & air to blow the dirt & stone dust out of the hole. Which leads us to the next problem.. rock. If you run into ledge or even just a really big rock, you are all done.

David,

Did you have enough height to lift the auger without disconnecting it?

If I put more than about an 8" extension on mine, it wouldn't clear the ground moving from hole to hole. So if I did something like that, I'd want to use pins to hook it together.

More than less. There are only a few different attachment types. There are about 3 different diameter round shafts. Then there are at least two hex sizes. There is even a couple of odd ball type deals. Some manufactures will show a chart with the dimensions of the attachment end of the auger.

Re: Post Hole digger won\'t go deep enough???

I had a built a 12" extension this morning, I will probably adjust the geometry again, so I get an 8" gain or so, but can travel between the holes without disconnecting it.
