\"Value\" of beat up 5\' Bush Hog and 6 way blade?

I have an auction coming up this week close to me that has a fairly well beat up 5" Bush Hog, this has near the front of the mower a circular wear pattern thru the deck where the outside radius of the blades would be. I am thinking as long as the gear box is good and I don't really care about looks as long as it kills brush its worth a couple hundred?? What do you think and what causes this type of wear pattern? I am thinking of checking it over throughly before auction day to make sure the shaft from the gear box is tight ect. Is the Bush Hog name worth any more that other names for some reason in small cutters like this?

Also on this auction is a 6 way adjustable three point 7 foot blade and a hydraulic three point log splitter. What are the chances a JD 4100 could run the log splitter in a satisfactory manner?

I know all of this is on the large side for a JD 4100 but figure if its cheap enough and I take smaller bites and go slow it might be a starting point since I don't have these three attachments.

I have seen the wear pattern you are talking about and the conclusion I reached is that it was made by the mower blade or blades rubbing on the housing causing the wear. Not sure what would cause the blades to hit the housing, maybe they were bent or worn and distorted.
If the wear is the only problem and the gear box is good, a patch can be welded on the housing. I would not bid too much because if you spend the time shopping you can find a working brush cutter for around $300 or less.

If you can check the mower out before the auction, you need to get to the blades and see what condition they're in and how much up and down play there is in them.

I think that mower has been well abused, and yes, the blades hitting the underdeck likely caused the wear pattern. It could be that the shaft is slightly bent causing the blades to ride improperly, or they could be malformed from trying to cut materials that are too thick for it's rating.

I'm too tired to go through the JD site to look up the flow rate on your tractor's hydraulics, but will venture to say that it could run it, slowly. Log splitters usually like a lot of hydro flow, but will still operate and split logs, but may move very slowly making the job take a while. If you know the brand of log splitter, try to find it on the net and see if you can find the requirements for flow rate. I've seen good new log splitters for 3pt for $750 and more.

No comment on the blade, don't have one, don't want one.

Mowers are like mobile homes, they lose value quickly after original purchase. You should never spend alot on a used mower.

Mowers in that sort of condition USUALLY have issues. It MIGHT have been fixed at one point, but more likely is it's been "patched", or just hasn't been fixed at all. Blades hitting the deck aren't good. I'd be inclined to look for something a little better, even if it meant spending a few pesos more. Old mowers always have SOME value to SOMEONE. They sell at auctions, just not to me.

REar blades always sell too. Older "cheap" blades usually garner around $100 at sales I go to. Better ones bring almost new prices.

Your 4100 will run a log splitter. Maybe not at MACH III speed, but it'll run it OK. I was told the same thing about my splitter, running off of a 4.3 GPM pump. Funny thing is, the splitter MIGHT be slow, I AM slow. It keeps up with me just fine.

The wear may be indicative of a bent blade. If the shaft is bent the stump jumper will likely not be parallel to the deck.

You can buy used/abused decks in various sizes for $100 or less in this neighborhood. I bought all my trailer would haul for $250 one time. I think I got 5 decks on it. good parts in case I break one, or need something.

WOW today was auction day, cold/foggy/rain/dampness goes right thru ya kinda day.

1. Rear blade sells first....a little higher than what I wanted but only by 20 or so....I got it for 160

2. Wood spliter comes up next...figured I didn't have to use it since it was only 35.00....to me

3. Bush Hog (yes its Bush Hog brand for whatever thats worth)...I opened the bid at 100.00...no one else bid! Yep I am happy.

I didn't realize til today that the sale was a my neighbors FIL's place...yep brush cutter has set for a few years but known to work fine by 2 son-in-laws of the fellow who died (I was able to verify this before it sold)

That and two old steel spreader wheels for the boat dock and I was done for the day.

The 285 pound anvil they found under a tree (85% hidden in the ground) sold for 750.00.

I had a cheap, used bush hog (not bush hog brand) with a similar wear pattern. The deck had a split in it, by the gear box. While running, you could see the gear box move quite a bit (and the split opening and closing). You can imagine the sound it made when the blades would hit the deck!

I got one season out of it. It was so beat up that I salvaged the PTO shaft and gearbox from it and sold the rest for scrap.

If the pins are worn, or the holes in the blades you can expect some serious up and down movement, which can also be a reason for the pattern. However, it will be all the way around, and not just on one side.
