guard on front of bush hog / rotary cutter?

I have a KK 4-ft brush hog. Use Soundguy's mudflap safety shields front and back. Works great. And it's cheap. I have less than $40 invested in materials.

Also consider adding a metal safety screen to protect your backside from flying objects. Mine is a piece of expanded metal (Home Depot has it in the window/door department). Attach it to the ROPS with hose clamps. Cheap protection.

WHICHEVER WAY YOU GO, YOU NEED SOME SORT OF FLEXIBLE FRONT DEFLECTER. THE BLADE TIP SPEED ON EVEN A 4' CUTTER IS OVER 110 MPH. THEY ARE SOLID STEEL AND HEAVY WITH A LOT OF MOMENTUM AND WILL TAKE ROCKS AND PUT BIG DENTS IN THE CUTTER. IMAGINE WHAT THEY WOULD DO TO A GOLF BALL SIZED STONE IF IT WENT FLYING OUT THE FRONT. a FREAK BOUNCE AND YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE WILL BE BADLY INJURED.

THE SOLID FRONT COULD GET HOOKED ON A STUMP OR SOME OTHER OBSTRUCTION. THE CONVEX SHAPE TO THE STUMP JUMPER (TO WHICH THE BLADES ATTACH) ALLOW IT TO PASS OVER SOME SOLID OBSTRUCTIONS WHICH MIGHT HANG UP THE SOLID FRONT ON THE CUTTER.

After reading about a guy who had a stick/wood piece enter his back and come out the front of his chest while brush hogging, I decided to make a shield too...mine is made from a heavy duty stainless steel perferated baking sheet.

I understand the guy that was injured afterwards made a shield for his tractor out of 1/2 inch clear lexan.

Chain guards are expensive but seem pretty functional. I just wanted a little more protection, just in case... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks for your thoughts on this issue. We decided to go with a King Kutter. I bought one today at TSC and once we make sure it works ok we will fabricate some type of front guard for it.
