draft control, military draft, & draft beer

I share Steve's opinion, although my draft control experience is with a boxblade and a landscape rake. I broke one rake in half already, while windrowing rocks after a bulldozer backfilled an old pond. The soil was loose, and the rake simply tried to bury itself. It snapped in half before I realized what was happening behind me. Now, if/when the (new) rake starts digging (too deep) the draft control pulls it back up to ground level.

Box blade is pretty obvious. My Jinmas didn't have draft control, and the tires would start digging deep ruts when the BB cut too big of a bite. I now set the draft control on the KAMA to lift the BB to preset operating depth BEFORE the wheels start spinning.

Kinda DRAFTY in here today!

I've got draft control on all three of my tractors. I still do some plowing, and in the case of the 2 tractors I use to plow, both generally have plows that are a full load hooke dto them. That's when it becomes a neccecity. I've never seen the need for using draft control on a tiller though. (Or a disc for that matter) It's (IMHO) only real value is when plowing or maybe subsoiling.

All three tractors are "AG" models, as opposed to compacts.

So. If you purposely buy a tractor WITHOUT draft control, does that make you a draft dodger?

All of my ford/NH tractors have it.. none of my red-green-orange tractors have it. It can come in handy for plowing, discing, and box bladeing. If you don't do a whole lot of those activities.. it's probably not even needed. Most ( many? ) tractors i see nowadays only have position control, and they seem to get along fine.. I figure if ya got draft.. it's like creme for coffee.. makes it better if ya got some.... but you can drink it without it if needed.

My old (now gone) tractor (IH 454) came with draft control. As most of the others have indicated, it was used for ground engaging implements (plow and BB for me). Being 2WD, draft control was real handy in muddy conditions. Once you got the hang of it, it certainly was functional and I got used to using it. When I purchased my new tractor (Kubota 3130), I got draft control on it, as I still use the plow and BB. Since I did not load the tires and chose R4s, heavy ground engagement in muddy conditions still make draft control mighty handy indeed. Could I get by without draft control? Sure. But for the price of the new machine and the convenience it provides, a couple hundred for draft control was trival, especially since I already had experience with it. I know other folks here will say use Ag tires or weights or chains and that's OK, but I configured the tractor the way I did to meet MY needs, not anybody else. Am I happy with the 3130? I'm thrilled and feel I made all the right choices. Ask around, but go with your gut feeling. 99.99% on the time, that will be the right choice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have draft control on my TN 65 and like it. I use it mostly when doing driveway maintenance. It is most useful when I reach the bottom of a hill or start going up a hill, it keeps the back blade or box blade from digging in too deep.
