\"finish\" mowing with rotary cutter

I have discovered that my "yard", which consists of about 9 acres, looks pretty good when I cut it with the rotary cutter. This is an area that wasn't cut routinely by the previous owner, but I would like for it to look nicer. I do mow a 1 acre area close around the house with the BX22 MMM. I am upgrading to a larger tractor and think I may just use a rotary cutter as the ground is pretty rough under all that grass (former cow pasture) and I'm thinking the rotary cutter will hold up better than a rear finish mower, plus save the $$$ that I would have to spend on the finish mower. I need a hog for other parts of my property anyway.
Anyone else do this? Pro's and con's? Thanks for your input!

Re: \"finish\" mowing with rotary cutter

Very workable plan, to which I can only add two suggestions; hire some kids to pick up all the rocks. Late winter before the grass gets started is the best time. Then get a decent angle grinder to keep a good edge on the rotary cutter blades. If you keep ahead of the nicks and gouges that typically show up on RC blades, you can generally get a cut that will pass as a finish mower cut from a distance.

That's actually all my neighbor uses to cut his 15 acre plot. The cut looks pretty good from where I sit.

Re: \"finish\" mowing with rotary cutter

I'm doing it more and more often.
For hogging, I've always kept my front about 1-2" lower than the rear so that in high stuff, the mower is dragged down by both front and rear hitting, makes it easier to go through the tough stuff, but for cutting my yard, I run it as even F/B as I can get it, and I actually get almost as good as with my lawnmower.

The post about getting the rocks out is great advice. Also, anything else that you could hit since you're going to be closer to your home. I've thrown stuff as far as close to 100 feet, and I wouldn't want it hitting the house, car, or something or someone else!
