Box Blade? I need to move some dirt with \'52 TO30

I have a 1952 Ferguson TO30 and it has no FEL. What I got with it was a rotary cutter and a beat to heck scraper blade.

I have a load of dirt that was just put over a culvert and I need to smooth it out. It is almost flat now, but the scraper blade won't dig in enough. I would have to go go over that dirt 50 times to take 12" down...

I was reading one of the box blade threads and someone was saying if you push in reverse, it can work like a dozer.

What are the scraper blades ideal for?
Do you have to put weight on them?
Also, I don't think the 3 point hitch puts any hydraulic downforce on the implement, does it?

Any advice? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Box Blade? I need to move some dirt with \'52 TO30

I have a 1949 8 N and a 7' scraper blade. I have spread 15 or so loads of dirt with it and leveled a 50' X 65' area to pour concrete for my garage. With mine I ajust the bite on the blade with the top link. Extend the link, more bite. Retract, less bite. It does work in reverse too but grading forward is easier.
I now have a 4 wheel drive Branson 3510 too and a box blade. A box blade is easier to move dirt and grade it more level. The box blade can be set to slide over the surface and end up smoother. With the grader I woop-de-do a lot.
If you have never spread dirt from a pile the trick is to back up as far as you can go, take a bite and move it forward a little. Then back up on the moved dirt and get a higher bite in the pile. Do this until you get to the top of the pile and then start bringing the pile down.

That means he makes hills and valleys instead of level smooth surface. It's real easy to do, just ask me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All ground engaging implements work better when properly weighted. in your case, you may need to adjust the top link, add weight to the blade and to the tractor. It's amazing how much better they work when weighted, but still not as good as a modern 4wd tractor.

I'd better duck out now before the shoes fly at me!.

Re: Box Blade? I need to move some dirt with \'52 TO30

My rear blade is good for snow removal and smoothing out gravel (used backwards). The box blade, with scarifiers, is what I use to level out mounds and valleys. It digs up the dirt and levels it out all in one pass.
