I have been looking for a 2 row planter for Dad to use in his garden for a couple of years. Everyone I find is either in need of serious repair, or is priced as high as a 4 or 6 row would be. This got me thinking about building my own, but I have some questions for those who have two rows.

What size square tubing is the main frame made out of?
Are the planter units attached via parallel linkages?
What planter units are used on your machine?

I would also like to see some pics of some or your units. My e-mail is gphillips42051@yahoo.com

I have farmed all my life so I don't think this project is beyond my capabilties, I would just like to go into this with all th information I need.

Thanks

It seems like you would be able to find a decent 2 row planter pretty easy. I just bought one for $200. I know several of the used equipment places have them for $400ish.

I'm starting to wonder why you would want a 2 row planter though, after planting 5 acres yesterday with one it takes forever. I may be looking for a 4 row planter!

Two row planters have gotten very popular because of gardening and food plot planting. Many times they are more expensive than the 4 rows.

I would suggest trying to get either JD 71 units or possibly AC units. The 71 units are very good simple planters. I have a two row planter and it work very well. I like a couple of things about the AC units. Many of them have fertilizer boxes and no till coulters. Also, they can use the JD plates which are readily available.

As far as the size of the tubes to make the tool bar with, just use the same size that was used on the planter that the units came off of.

I planted 3 acres of corn a few weeks ago and it was kinda slow but I enjoy the seat time.

You got the dead spot on about 2 row planters getting popular all right! I just recently finished helping a "camping buddy" re-work a "pre-historic_ JD.??..246 I think it is/was..? OLD planter. Sand blasting...greasing...repainting...geeze was it a pita! But man does it look good now..all nice and shiny green! He had to buy 2 new "disks??..for it because th old ones..the bearings were SHOT in them ( solid balls of rust) and some sort of cast iron piece that fits under the fertilizer box on one side ( dont know what its called??)

The planter is EASILY lifted and carried around with my B3030 ( which isnt a big tractor at all!) So about any CUT could use it. I think he told me the sum total costs he has in it now is right at $700...but it really does look like brand new.

And you speak of gardens?? He told me the other day he had 4 more rows of corn to put out ( weather here is off and on) and he has mixed lots out presently ( various types)..but at 80% germination he will get....get this now...8500 ears from what he has out now!...GEEZE!!!!! The guy enjoys his gardening!!...lol
