Removal of brush hog blades???

/ Removal of brush hog blades??? #11
As has been said, the Bush Hog brand, and I assume some others, has a hole in the deck that makes it pretty easy to remove the blades without removing the stump jumper. However, my Howse did not have such a hole. So, after I removed the big nut on the bottom and the stump jumper would not come off, I rigged a homemade "gear puller". I put that big nut back on part way so the whole heavy stump jumper and blades wouldn't fall on me when it came loose, then used a short, but heavy piece of channel iron I had and two 6" C clamps to make a puller and pulled the stump jumper loose from the spindle. Sure was a loud "bang" when it come loose.

I just took mine all apart so that I could bend it straight and sharpen blades.

My Rankin 60" cutter has an access hole on the top. Not all brands are smart enough to do this, if yours isn't there then this is the time to cut one.

I fed the 1-11/16 socket through the hole and used my 24" craftsman breaker bar to remove the nut. Not as bad as I thought it would be. The bolts wouldn't come out despite the blades moving freely. So I threaded the nut back on until the bolt end was flush with the nut and then used a 1/2" socket extension and a large wrench to drive it down from above. Once they popped loose, I removed the nuts and then popped the bolts out. Great, blades off.

The stumpjumper is mounted to a splined and tapered shaft. You remove that big center nut and then need to overcome the tapered fit. I did this with a bunch of hammer hits from all sides. The splines were greased on mine.

Putting this all back together will be a challenge since gravity is trying to make all the pieces fall to the ground. My plan is to flip the mower up on its side for reassembly. I plan to use antiseize or grease for reassembly. I don't want it to seize up but I also don't want it to fall apart while running it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I needed to pound the stumpjumper flat and weld cracks shut. The blades needed some heavy duty maintenance too. Heck, I even painted the whole works orange.

Tried to get my nuts off last year with a breaker bar plus a 4' pipe, and they wouldn't budge. This was after weeks of spraying them every time I walked by the tractor. Ended up having to heat them up and got a 6' pipe to add to the bar and it was still VERY difficult. Then had to use a 3lb sledge with lots of arm behind it to get the bolts out. The mower is about 14 years old and never had blades changed.

Worse case scenerio, find the right bolts and cut the old ones off with a torch. But make sure you find the right ones first.

I got it off /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Took a four foot bar and drove it against the stump jumper and moved it on alittle than I was able to wiggle it off. I couldn't find any replacements right off so I sharpened the blades and put them back on.

I will be making one of those access hole tomorrow. It was good to take everything apart but would be nicer to just be able to take the blades off.

Thanks for all the help
