After 10 hours on the TC 29D, I found myself wishing for industrial tires. It was muddy and wet and I was backing into my garage (in 2WD). The floor is smooth concrete with a 2” lip at the door opening. My rear tires started to spin on the concrete as the front tires came to the lip. If only I had the R4 tires. I am sure they would have pulled me right through. In all seriousness, I am glad I got the ag. tires. After working in my hilly woods, in dry loose soil, and in heavy mud, the ag. tires hardly spin. I almost got the R4 tires that were on the tractor in the dealer’s lot. In my test drive at the dealer, the R4s were much smother riding on asphalt, but spun fairly easily in the loose dirt. My dealer said he sells less than 10% ag. tires on compacts, but he did nothing to discourage me from getting them. Other dealers told me outright that I did not want ag. tires. Thanks to the great advise here, I feel that I got the best tires for my needs. When I tear up my future yard and my wife yells at me I may feel differently, but that will be later

I have about the same size Kubota as the TC29D with ag tires. Every now and then I see a tractor with R4's and wonder if I should have had them put on my tractor. The dealer suggested ag's because of the type of things I would do with the tractor. I have heard from others that R4's don't have the same traction as ag's do, good to hear from your experience that I made the right choice. I have driven over the lawn several times as long as I don't have to use 4WD and don't make sharp turns the lawn is not too badly scared.

Well I have the R4s and I was backing up on my wet patio and the tires started spinning on the 2" lip and I had to lockup the diff to get it there/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I had the R-4 tires on my JD 4400 and they were totally worthless for my use,I had to bite the bullet and buy the R-1 tires and rims and loaded all 4 tires,it is unreal the difference it made. The tractor sets higher,it is like a larger tractor. The traction ,you would not believe the difference and pulling power.I have a hydro and I pulled some logs in that are 22' long x 21" through and 12' long and 25" through up a 15% grade about 200' in distance.I had all the RPMs I could get and it barely made the trip(but it did it).I would not want to do this everyday, but at least I can say I done it(the tractor done it). I had one log that started rolling while it was hooked to my tractor and I was on 3 wheels when the chain tightened up.

I unfortunatly can't use ag tires as the primary purpose is mowing, I would like to go to R4 on the rear (it's a 2 wheel drive JD 770 w/turf tires) when I do get into rototilling and dirt/ driveway work. Would R4s be worth it or should i go to tire chains? Any experiences passed on would be greatly appreciated!

I too have already been on 3 wheels while pulling a 30' telephone pole out of the woods. A little bit of tractor skill is a dangerous thing.

My International has AG's and my Kubota has R4's. The difference in traction is huge on my grassey areas and mud. The R1's or AG's are far superior. That being said, I like having the R4's on the Kubota as it doesn't dig a hole in my grassy areas the second they slip like the R1's will. The AGs will put a hole in almost anything they spin on. If thats not an issue for you, the R1's will give you far better traction on dirt and grass (not for lawns). Consider looking at Michelin's so called R4's or industrial tires the XM27's. They have what really appears to be more of a R1 tread then an R4. Rat...

No doubt for general tractor use if you aren't mowing the ag tires are certainly the best choice. I have the R-4's and they are not near as good as ag tires. I just can't bring myself to bite the bullet and get the new ones though.
