Tractor
Kubota M4900
I am looking for a plow for my 2WD Kubota M4900 which is rated at 54 HP (45 PTO.) The manual says a 2 bottom 16" moldboard plow is max for this tractor. I don't have the time to travel to an auction. I just want to make a call and have it ordered and delivered to a tractor dealership where I can pick it up. I will use it to plow 30 acres max a year, realistically less.

We don't have TSCs here.

I was looking at a Howse 2-16" on the their website. It is rated up to 50 HP.

http://www.howseimplement.com/html/moldboard_plows.html

Anyone use one of these? Good product?

I also saw King Kutter makes a 2-14" plow.

Any other brands I should take a look at?

Also are coulters that big of a deal? My fields have been disced every year at least for 10 years.

I am using the plow to turn my food plots and then will come back with a 7 foot disc harrow to smooth thing out. After trying to get a good seed bed with just the harrow, I realized it wasn't going to cut the mustard. Not by a long shot.

Thanks gents.

After doing a search, it seems the above metioned plows aren't worth a hoot.

Seems I am going to have to see what I can find in way of a used one. Also does anyone make a good new one these days? Just curious because I can't seem to find anyone online that does.

I know for a fact, Deere makes a 1 bottom 3ph plow, I think they make a 2 bottom also. Can't get much better than a company that has been making plows for 150+ years. I'm not sure how you find the Deere plows on thier website, the only way I could get the 1 bottom to come up was when I "add an attachment" to a tractor I "built" on the website.

Getting a good new one or two bottom plough may take some looking. There are very good new plows out there but most are at least four bottom. Have you considered a used drawbar pull type rather than three point?:)

I'm almost certain the Howse and the King Kutter plow is the same EXACT plow. I bought one (Howse) at auction a few summers back. It was about worthless (IMHO) It was a 2X14" model. It pulled harder than a THREE X 14" Ford 101 plow I had at the time. Fit and finish was horrible. They use wear parts that are listed as replacement parts for a Ford 101 plow oddly enough. They have a low beam that doesn't give much "trash clearance", coulters are options and EXPENSIVE should you go that route. (Plows NEED coulters in MOST cases) And worst of all, they're shear-bolt bottoms. I DEPLORE shearbolt plows. (Spring-trip "re-set" bottoms for me)

Most used equipment dealers will have access to decent used plows. Ford 101, Massey #66, and a few others still have a good availability of parts. It wouldn't be hard at all to rebuild the bottoms on an older (BETTER) plow.

Yes, JD does still sell plows. They are available in the Agriculture, Tillage section of deere.com. Here are the two list prices for 2 bottoms:eek:

975 In-Furrow Reversible Moldboard Plow, Tension Bolt Standards, 2 Bottom 0242P $3,066.00

975 In-Furrow Reversible Moldboard Plow, Safety Trip Standards, 2 Bottom 0252P $3,655.00

I agree with farmwithjunk about a trip reset plow. By all means get a good used plow, no shear pins. Real pain in the #%* to stop in the middle of plowing a field to change a pin. IMHO you can't beat a used Ford 101 plow. There are literally thousands of them out there. It shouldn't be a problem finding one.

If you've never plowed before, get someone to show you how. There's more to it than just hooking up and plowing. Don't ask me how I know. Good luck.

If you had to pick a two bottom 14" or 16" plow from below which one and why?

I was looking at number 9. Thoughts?

Keep in my mind I have never used a plow in my life.

As stated before I will be pulling it with my Kubota M4900 2WD.

Thanks.

I've two 2 bottoms. One shear pin type and the other a safety trip shank type. Never plowed an inch yet, So I'm readin' and trying to pick up on what experience that you guys share. I'm curious as to what kind of circumstances when you sheared a shear pin. Such as, was it large rocks, or would tryin' to go to fast and sheared a pin? Want to know where to pick up extra shear bolts? I don't have too many rocks and when there is mostly 3" or smaller. bjr
