repair pto drive shaft

I have a shortenned 3pt drive shaft that I want to lengthen for use with other implement. Does anyone have any experience with lengthening the slip shaft?

I'm told you should separate at universal and weld in piece there the slip of the shaft would not occur when using implement.

Will this work?

That kinda sounds like cutting your floor joists too short in your house... and then gluing the ends together to make longer..../w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

No...I wouldn't weld it to lengthen... very dangerous under torque/load conditions... can break and fly apart...

To weld a stationary piece is one thing... not a PTO shaft though...

And yes people have done it and gotten by... only with a prayer... It's a very serious accident waiting to happen... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I agree with John, it would probably work, and if the welder's good enough, it might not break, but it's a chance I wouldn't take.

Well, two very knowledgeable guys have given you good advice. When I have visions of flying metal and think about 540 PTO speed, the price of a new shaft doesn’t seem much. Now that I have chipped in my 2 cents it will even be cheaper./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Personally, I wouldn't weld a 'piece' in to lengthen it, but I sure would have a competent machinist cut the yokes or ends off and retube it! Been there, done that...to include drive shafts on many different types of vehicles.

Be sure if you do retube it, that the shaft is balanced. The welding is half of the equation, the other half is the balancing of the finished shaft.

Anyone got a URL for finding a new tube? My type is not rectangular, but sort of a triangle cross section.

Emery, if all you need is a few inches (...and who amongst us doesn't?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) you can find a PTO shaft extension in the 2001 Tractor Suppy catalog on page 204. I have a chipper/shredder that I have to use an extension on one tractor without an overrun clutch and not use it on a tractor with the overrun clutch. The difference is about 2-1/2" to 3". ...hope this helps.
