Can I use a disk in reverse? this would be ideal to get close to the edge of the feild where there is a slight drop off and a danger of tipping. I saw in another post the damage of having the disk down when turning how tight of a turn can you do with the disk in the ground?

If your disc is a pull type, then sure, it'll go in reverse. If your disc is a 3 pt type, there is risk of bending a 3 pt lifting arm or bending a toplink, especially if you hit something.

Which type is yours?

IMO don't turn a 3pt in the ground. I loaned mine out and this is what happened with someone that didn't know any better.

backing up on level ground? yes.
turning more than just slightly? no.

You can only make gentle sweeping curves, not turns, when disk is ground engaged. You can lift disk with 3pt, back up to something, drop disk and pull straight forward.. do this several times... it will break up ground better than nothing...

however, I question why you want to get so close to a slope/tip point... erosion might be a problem if you do... you are best judge of this, but I stay away from breaking up ground already in grass at such points. Of course, if there is no grass there now, then disking and planting grass can be a good thing...

Lee it is your post that made me ask the question about turns lessoned learned.
Texas John after many years of plowing by the previous owner there is a ridge along the ditch on the windward side of the driveway that catches the snow in the winter, I want to loosen this up so that I can level it out so I can mow the ditch and not have so many drifts in the winter. I can get two foot drifts on a sunny day with a wind.
Thanks for all the help

brr...2ft drifts... brr.... I'd want to do something about that, too... maybe that's why I live in Texas:eek: Best wishes on leveling that out!
