Howse or International post hole digger...

Im needing a post hole digger...I have locally a Howse for about $500 with an auger and an International with auger for $450...

Anyone have any recomendations or experience with either?

I'll be putting up an AG fence and I'm planning on a 6" post for the corners and was going to get a 9" auger. Do I NEED to add additional posts on each side with a connecting post? I've seen some with added corner posts and some that go right to the steel posts. I'm in Alabama and it's that "red clay" I'll be digging in. I'm hoping maybe just the 6" post and a couple of bags of cement will be OK?

I have an International, bought it back in May. I have used it to drill a number of holes in our stiff yellow clay we have here in Kentucky and it has done a fine job.

If I understand, I think your asking if you need to brace the corner posts for you fence. If so, yes you do. Any tension(tight fence) is going to pull the post toward the middle. It don't take much before your fence isn't tight. I learned the hard way to over build. The fence will just stay good longer. Besides the corners, you should put some type of braces & a heavy pole anywere there is a change in direction. Most fencers would recommend a brace every 50 ft or so even when in a straight line. As far as the brand of hole digger, I've only been tractoring about 18months & the only attachments I have now are the brush hog & box blade & fel. The fel came on my Century. I bought the cutter & bb afterwards. They are both International. I used the bb to loosen red clay to level for a 18ft pool & the arms folded up like an accordian. I've been really careful w/ the cutter & had minimal bending of the frame. Maybe I just expected more, but I don't feel like a abused them either. I'll buy heavier duty attachments from now on. Not sure I'd trust International again.

The Howse equipment usually has a unique driveline set of yokes and u-joints that are usually available from a Howse dealer. International will have easier parts availability for the driveline. We can usually supply parts for both.--Ken Sweet
