I am slowly (it's taken about 4 years) to get to a point on my property to have enough trees/brush cleared out to start seeing a 1-2 acre wildlife food plot area. the question is what tool to start working the area for planting my be next year. the ground has a few inches of a peat (old roots) like layer and then very dark soil. (was a wet area that has been drained over the last 10 years or so. My question do I get a box blade and rip that peet out and have the soil or would a three point disk with notched blades cut the peat up and work it down with the soil. I don't think the wife would be to happy if I ended up with both toys ( I mean tools)
thanks

Turning plow, then disc. OR rototill. My suggestion is for the rototiller from kingkutter with gear drive. Cheap and tough.

Leave the peat.. just get it mixed up... it will make for a very rich soil..

Plow and disc is a decent idea.

Im in a "somewhat" similiar situation except that I only need to do a small amount..and Im working on "brown concrete" commonly referred to as CLAY. The ONLY "work" my back yard has seen in over 20 years..was ME walking on it....:). A close friend rototilled it with a 6ft wide tiller..and a MUCH LARGER tractor than I have..and it shoved him all over the place...he actually had to STAND on the brakes to keep control of it...because with each bite into it ( about 3 inches deep) it would shove him fwd.

I posted a similar question about "what tool ( impliment)" and got about every answer you can think of...BUT..recently I ran across a set of HEAVY ..5ft wide disks ( no notched blades) and got them "on loan"..and if they work for me I'll buy the for a song and a dance..basically...at least I think so, seeing the condition they are in and all.

I have about 2000 sq feet of ??..Grass" to plant on some "pathways"..Id guess you'd call them.. And with the disc ALONE..no additional weight ( so far??) Im cutting the ??( cant call it soil?..for sure) "dirt" 3 inches deep. And that allows me to be able to have it "lose" to be able to backdrag some to get it "semi level" ( thats all I ask fo it).

My own attack is to hit it each week..keeping the top 3-4 inches good and loose...and whil Im gone my friend is going to spred 1-1/2 inches of fresh manure all over where I need it..and on my return from vacation in mid september...he and I THEN rototill all that in and plant the seeds.

"Repeated" disking ALONE..should chop up all the "upper layer stuff" and allow water..etc to get down lower. If it were me..Id disc the living CR** out of it and plant...period!
