Farmi Winch ?\'s

For those of you with a winch, I was wondering what the height of the high pull point for winching is? Also, what is the height of the lower snatch-block for skidding? Does anyone have a picture of the cable sliders they could send - how do these work?

Re: Farmi Winch ?\'s

Marty -- Without running out barefoot and taking measurements (snowing like a son of a gun out there!) the top block is about 4.5 - 5 feet off the ground, and the lower is about 18 inches. No pics of the cable sliders, but Peter H is an expert at explaining things. The best site for info would be Steve Carver's webpage. Go to implements, Farmi winch. If you need any specific info feel free to email me.

Love the winch, btw. It's given me more fun than any other implement by far!

Re: Farmi Winch ?\'s

Mine's 100 miles away, but I can give you approximate measurements. With the dozer blade on the ground, the top pully is about 5 feet off the ground, and the lower pully is about 14"-16" off the ground.

The sliders consist of two parts loosely bolted together so they can pivot. One part is a collar/sleeve that the cable threads through. This is the part that slides freely on the cable. The other part is simply a chuck of metal with a hole and notch. You put the choker chain through the hole and then slip one of the links into the notch to lock it, just like putting a chain hook on a link.

The very end of the cable is a fixed hook. The end hook goes on one choker chain for one log, then you pull the cable and slider over to a second log/choker and hook it on, and so forth up to the number of sliders. When you winch in the logs, they eventually all get pulled together into a bunch and hauled in together. Usually the log on the end hook moves first until the slider on the second log bottoms out on the hook and now you're haulling two logs.

Re: Farmi Winch ?\'s

I have an older model Farmi winch, early 1980's vintage that I purchased new. The top pulling point on mine is about 5' off the ground. I have never used the lower position but the mount is about 18" off the ground. Like Pete the winch is the most used 3PH implement I have.

Re: Farmi Winch size for TC33D?

Pete and other logging winch guru's

I'm considering buying a Farmi Winch for my NH TC33D. I've no experience in the area. I'm wondering what the best match for my tractor is. Just looking at the horsepower ratings, I was leaning towards the JL 351, but my dealer has an almost new (used one day) 290 that I can get a bit of a $$ break on and still have some warranty coverage. I 'm just wondering if I'll regret not going with the larger unit.

I have 80 mostly wooded acres that need some serious cleanup (leftovers of people pirating trees for firewood?) I'll also be doing some cutting for firewood and thinning out stands. any recommendations?

Re: Farmi Winch size for TC33D?

John -- There have been a few logs (big, heavy hardwoods) that have pushed the envelope on my 351, especially when they hung up on a stump or boulder. 9 times out of 10 the 351 has enough ooomph to pull the boulder out of the way, or to slide the log past the stump. I think a smaller winch would do the job, but would force me to reposition the tractor or pivot point more often.

I thought about getting the 290 for the same reason, but am glad I didn't. My recommendation is to go with the most capable winch your HP can support. YMMV, especially if you're dealing with lightweight logs.

Re: Farmi Winch size for TC33D?

Tough call, especially if the price difference is significant. I too went for the 351P (I strongly recommend the P version which has the dozer blade) and am glad I did for the same reasons Pete suggests.

By the way, I think tractor weight rather than HP is the much more significant factor is sizing a winch. I find my winch places an almost insignificant load on the engine, but at 7700lbs of pulling force it sure can jerk the tractor around. HP and weight do of course tend to correlate. My 2910 is about 3000lbs and Pete's 3010 is probably close to 4000lbs. I don't know where a TC33D lands. I wouldn't want to use the 351P on a lighter tractor than what I have, and I think Pete's is a more appropriate weight.

Re: Farmi Winch size for TC33D?

Hayden:

Brochure lists weight on an L3010HST as 2745#. (I don't have a brochure with the 2910 in it).

My TC33D is listed as 2474#. I have a Woods model 1012 FEL (approx 850#) and filled rear tires (about 600#). Would you figure this is enough to get decent performace out of the model 351?

The price break on the 290 was not a large one over his normal new selling price. I'm strongly leaning towards the 351, unless my tractor can't take advantage of the extra capabilities of this unit.
