While backdragging roots with the new toothbar last weekend (L4330 Kubota, LA853 loader, HD quick attach bucket, Markham Welding TB), the wife pulled the bucket off with a bang. Upon examination, what happend is that one of the tapered pins somehow turned 180 degrees in its guide and also broke off the bottom 1/4" or so of the pin. The other side evidently popped out without doing too much damage. I disassembled the mechanism, turned the pin back around the right way, and cleaned up the broken pin end with the angle grinder. Thankfully, there seems to be enough pin left to work OK.

The root cause was evidently that the lower quick attach bucket brackets that the pins engage did not have the "pin slot" cut deep/large enough for the pin to engage more than about 3/4" deep. So only the tip of the pin was engaging the bracket, and the backdragging force was more than the pin tip could take.

So I also ground the brackets out so that the pins could engage deeper, at least halfway up the taper. Think I should grind em out even farther? Or maybe just not abuse and overstress them?

I recall seeing a similar thread on here a long while back that resulted in a similar fix, and I think it also involved adding some washers under the pin springs to increase the down force, but I couldn't find the old thread. A search on "Quick Attach" yeilds something like 200+ pages of hits!

Sorry, we forgot the camera!

yea those angle pins are lame 3/4 in. should be bigger, mine are broke a bit as well and the forks pop off, doing off angled heavy work. The worst thing i did was grease the QA pins now there finikey/pop out easier. I don't really consider it abuse or over stress What Im doing just a lame pin design.maybe Ill grind it out when i get new pins or make my own pins.

No pun intended? :)

Is this a Markham quality control issue? I was seriously thinking to buy one of their toothbars and now ... ???

SkipperBrown,

No, this had nothing whatsoever to do with the toothbar; I'm VERY satisfied with it. This has to do with the Kubota QT pins and the Kubota HD bucket brackets where the pins "seat". Having the teeth to use a backdrag rake put a bit more load on the pins than they could handle with the poor engagement, and in a direction that they weren't really designed to handle very well.

I was always concerned if the quick-tach loader bucket would be as strong as direct tach bucket. I know I put a lot of stress on my bucket and I do a lot of back dragging with the tooth bar and the bottom of the bucket. When I bought my tractor I really wanted the quick tach and fork set up but it was a special order for my tractor and more expensive so I went with other stuff.

You can help prevent this from happening by welding on some metal onto the QA plate to reinforce the pins insertion.

You'd think a company like Kubota would redesign the part rather than expect their customers to modify it themselves.

Quick Attack is the greatest thing since sliced bread! I personally use the bucket and forks numerous times throughout the day switching back and forth very easy I also have the QA BH buckets and switching is a breeze. Bucket forks are not an option! their to weak/they reduce the load capacity.

I don't think it would matter if I had the gearmore QA or Bota the design is the same Bota actually looks stronger and is braced with bigger pieces. It comes down to how you use/abuse your machine. Of course unless you have a weak machine. I even ripped a fork off my fork asembly..... now thats abuse. Forks are fun and ive stacked many of these in the past........ just some of the fun you can have.

Now a better design is to be had in all and everything.

I believe it's a problem with all newer tractors that have the two handle with spring, square washer, and the solid pin with the angle ground on the end two prongs up top with a roll pin threw the holes to hold it on!!!! I just broke a second one yesterday, yes they do not go far enough down they should go down past the tapper and both times on my tractor which is a Mahindra 6010 HST but what do ya do nowadays nothing is made to last it's all about lots of parts that are made to break so they make more money!!!! That being said I don't take my bucket off I have a bale spear that goes on the bucket and they apparently have never thought like a Union Pipefitter/Welder so yep you guessed it, it's getting welded on for now, I can cut the weld's later and remove my bucket and grind off the excess weld that is left over LOL!!!!
