I want to put an over-run clutch on my PTO and have noticed they can vary a lot in price. Tractor Supply offers one for about $65 but I have seen others on the net for closer to $100.

Should I steer away from the cheaper types?

Thanks.

I think that our local ford dealer has them for around the 40 mark, and they seem to be well built. You may try calling the dealers and see if they have them for less.

What I find here in an agricultrual state is that the local dealers are quite often less expensive then the TSC type stores.

Well, not exactly.............Yes, they all do the same thing...."ratchet"...........But there are only 2 different types that I know of.......

1........There is one that has to be installed with a roll pin that is supposed to be permanently connected to the tractor's p.t.o. shaft. What I mean by permanently is that you CAN take it off, its just more trouble to do so....I've had the roll pin break on my Forn 8N, which I sold a few years ago, but you just replace the pin.

2........The one that I like best, which is on my Yanmar YM2000, is the Quick Attach or as some say Quick Dis-Connect over-run clutch.......It can be removed and put back on on the tractor's p.t.o. shaft in a matter of 5 seconds or less.......It has the little spring-loaded "button" that you push down (like some of the brush mower pto drivelines) to get it on the shaft.............Thats why it costs more money than the one with the roll-pin........But I definitely think its worth it, myself.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the feeback guys.

My fear is that I might choose one that will break and I won't be able to get it off. One with a quick release mechanism seems like the way to go.

If it breaks, sadly to say, thats the easiest way that it'll come off......Probably, it'll just fall off to be honest.....From my knowledge, the only things that could break is the roll pin (in the cheaper over-run clutch)......All you have to do is replace the roll pin....That only costs a couple dollars (give or take a little).....................Another way for it to break, FOR BOTH OF EM', is because of lack of greasing them........YOU HAVE TO KEEP THEM GREASED REGULARLY.........THEY BOTH COME WITH A GREASE FITTING.......

If I were you, and I had the option, I would definitely get the Quick Attach model...........I've had both and the Quick Attach is just easier to deal with.....Especially with the hot sun beaming down on ya'!......

RCO Tractor - Discount Tractors Online (which is where I got mine), and Yanmar Tractor Parts, Sales, Service, and Delivery. both sell them.......Go take a look.......If you browse around on their sites, you will find pictures of the Quick Attach model..

I hope I have helped you,

Travis

P.S........THE QUICK ATTACH MODEL DOES NOT HAVE NO ROLL PIN TO DEAL WITH.

I may be wrong but i think they are all the same .I have look at a lot of them. If you get one get the Over Running Clutch (Quick Detach) That is the best way to go.I got mine from Hoye Tractor for $59.90
