Hi All,

Picked up a Eurocardan clutch from Agri-Supply this week (very dignified name for a slip clutch, I must say...:p) which typically goes on the implement end of the PTO shaft...

Reason being I have had the previous tractor up on it's hindquarters using the winch, also have engaged the winch with no movement in the driveline with the PTO engaged...

Any reasons not to mount it right on the PTO of the tractor so the protection is always in place (sometimes redundant)?

I know there will be a loss of HP it can apply if I can get it "tuned" just right... so I can slip before major "bog down" etc. occurs... my hope is I can get within a HP or two...

would like to see a pct of slip clutch. how much did it cost? also will it work as intended? working on a rear winch for logging and think slip clutch would be a good idea. agh

Sorry, meant to post it...

Was 75.95 including UPS from NC to ME.

I can't figure it won't... hoping someone had tried it... best view would be on Agri-Supply.com under PTO... Eurocardan clutch,,, 6 spline

browns40,

I bought one as well except it is the smooth round with shear bolt hole.

Did you get any instructions or a manual with yours? I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust it and maintain it without instructions.

I contacted Agri-Supply about the lack of documentation with it but I have not heard back from them.

As you seem to realize, they're typically installed on the implement end. Safety issues are raised if/when they're put on the tractor end.

Besides that, have you checked to see if the splines are even compatible?

hi All,

No, no documentation... only maintenance needed is regular slipping, which there are a couple good threads on... I was in on one if you check my old posts...

Haven't put it on yet, but the male splined end is a "ringer" for the PTO... I'll let you know...

I also bought one from Agri-Supply with the smooth shaft female on the output side. On my Bush Hog I had to machine about 3/16" off the hub to get the shear bolt holes to line up plus drill out the shaft hole for the larger bolt diameter. From a previous post and/or the links referenced the setting seems to be 1.10" for spring length. Using vernier calipers it was not hard to set that length. It seemed to work right with that setting. I haven't mowed all summer but will probably mow once more before winter. Following recommendations I will loosen all springs and deliberately slip the clutch for a few minutes (smoke test) then reset the spring length.

Well, it fits right on the back of the tractor, so of course onto the PTO shaft... on this particular shaft it took up all the "slack" on it... for others there may be some concern about bottoming out against the PTO housing on back...

Definitely a serious safety concern, as greg pointed out... it sits beyond the back shield of the tractor, so between that and the plastic shield on the shaft there's about a 3 inch gap of exposed universal joint & slip clutch bolts & springs, so you could feasibly fall into it under the wrong circumstances.

If I put this set-up on the implement end I'd have the same problems with exposing the moving parts, with a much larger gap on the 3 pt arms to fall through at the end I'm working with on the winch...

Other issue is figuring out just where to set the clutch... I left it where it drags the tractor back until the blade hits something solid, then it slips... I'll have to carry an extra socket & wrench next time I'm cutting in case it needs more tuning... but today is for stacking:(.

I'll post pics after the work is done...

Sorry, didn't finish 'til it was dark... here are some pics of the slip clutch "installed".

Seems to be good to go, so I'll leave it in place barring any difficulties, and hopefully have a little more piece of mind when turning the heavier implements.:)
