I am helping my father-in-law sell off some implements from his brother's estate. I am trying to figure out the price for a 10" drag disc. I am not sure of the make but it looks to be all intact but rusty. The gangs are movable with the center tung to make them agressive or straight. Sorry I don't have a picture of it. Any guesses as to a ball park price? The disc is in Hamlin NY so if you are interested let me know.

I don't know your market, but around here, maybe $100 to $400 if in good condition. Drag disc will be limited market. Over 8' limits buyers for reasons of power (need at least 50 HP in most conditions) and difficulty in transporting.

Try to ge a picture and I'll TRY to identify brand.

Those old "drag disc's" did a great job! Just hard to move from place to place.

I am not sure what you call a drag disc. Are you referring to a drag harrow? A drag harrow to me has 4-5 rows of pipes with vertical spikes that can be angled with a center lever to make them more vertical (agressive) or slanted. A section is usually about 4-5 feet in width and length. Each section can be fastened together and make variable widths. They are rarely used by farmer's today. A section can be pulled easily by a small tractor or even ATV. In my area, this may bring $25-50 per section depending on condition, more it they are together in a gang. Mostly used today by people who broadcast seed and then go over it lightly with a harrow, by horse people with arenas or if you have a sandy beach and want to smooth it over.

I don't have a picture, but a DRAG DISC is simply an old fashioned disc that doesn't hook up via 3-point hitch, nor does it have transport wheels/axle. They were built "back in the old days" for farmers who never left their own ground.

Farmwithjunk,
I was looking at Ken Sweet's site to get an idea of prices. I am amazed how cheap this type of disc sells for. The 10' size is what is keeping me from bringing it home. I only have a 27hp CUT so pulling it would be difficult in tilled ground. I have a 6.5' 3 ph type that works OK for what I need.

Thanks,
Eric

They sell cheap because they're not as handy to move around as other choices, but once "in the dirt" a drag disc is a tough act to beat. In any soils I'm familiar with, you'd need 45 to 50 HP (MINIMUM) to lug a 10' disc.

Eric, When you say it's OK for you need, what do you mean? I have a 25hp CUT and am in the market for a disc and I'm not sure what size I should get. I have 4wd but turf tires. I'm wanting to smooth out some previous farmland. Any ideas or suggestions?

Torch, pins, angle iron, welder. Reconfigure to fit your needs. As for old "discs" themselves, I have seen a cooker made out of a couple of them.

A disc is a trade off between weight, agressiveness of cut, type of disc blade, notched or plain, and tractor hp.

A disc that is very light doesn't cut as well, and is more flimsy.. however you can ballast it to help cut.. but then you are left with a heavy flimsy disc that may wear out soon. Example might be the economy angle iron, adjustable or fixed 4'-6' discs you can pick up at farm stores.

Then you move up to heavier and more expensice units that may be box tube framed.

Got to watch the bearing types too. Different maint needs.

Also.. it does little good to get more disc that your tractor can pull. Though you can drop blades to get weight with less width of cut.

It's all a trade off based on what you want to do, how long you have to do it, how much you want to spens, and what you got to pull it with.

Now I know what a drag disc is. Never heard of one before. More educated than ever!
