Dearborn plow help

I need some help from the plow experts. I bought a model 10158 2 bottom plow and I wanted to get some opinions on what needs replacing. I've already found that the coulter hub will need replacing since it was worn off inside at an angle. I don't know all the proper terms yet so I'll do my best at describing and asking questions.

Is it pretty bad? If I were to lube this up and adjust it right would it work decently or are the wear parts too far gone?

You need new shares. You could probably get away with what you have, IF you're just going to plow a garden every year, but if there's any chance of doing much with that plow, get new ones. Someone has welded new points on your old shares. I can't see in your pictures if there's removable "shins". That would be the vertical cutting edge. Lots of the older plows had the shin made into the moldboard. If so, I'd try to hang on to what you have. Moldboards like that are hard to find. Replaceable shins aren't.

There should have been a FRONT coulter too. You can get away without them, but you're better off WITH them. That IS a jointer (coulter "scraper")

I've seen plows worn far beyond what yours is, and they did OK. Shares will help it get into hard ground better than what you have, but under MOST conditions, they'll work reasonably well.

Hard to find parts for that plow--I would try to fix up what you have to work with--Ken Sweet

I guess I should have mentioned how much usage I wanted to get. I've got about 12 acres of sandy loam that I want to replant for pasture next spring. After that it might see 2-3 acres per year total. So if I can get this wobbly coulter hub fixed it should get the job done? Is this coulter really necessary since my currrent pasture isn't thick sod.

So the tips on the shares are welded. And that's probably why one seems to be bent downward more than the other. From things that I've read, there should be a number on the back of the share to match to a replacement? Any clue what these usually go for?

Any tips on where to find these parts?

I'm new to this but is a plow the best implement to use for preparing and seeding land for pasture? Maybe the best thing for preparing a seedbed would be renting something like a Harleyrake. Like I said, I'm new to this and maybe one of the veterans could give some insight.

If you need parts start with your local New Holland dealer. He will have a schematic of the plow, by individual piece/bolt. Nobody said it would be cheap though. I think you probably can still get shares from TSC for that model. BobG in VA

New Holland dealer MAY have parts breakdown, maybe not. Dealer for sure WON'T have shares, or very many if ANY parts for that plow. Very few parts still available (through NEw Holland) for MUCH NEWER model 101 plows. Those are "take it to a blacksmith" parts.

Got to differ with you here. I've got a Dearborn 10-8 which precedes the current subject plow by maybe 5-10 years. The local NH dealer had both the shares and the 5/8" bolts for the tail wheel. Here's the deal: Shares were $150 each for steel and bolts were about $7.00 each. Much expensivo! I found cast shares up in Pittsburg for $65 each so I bought 2....(didn't need but 1...) but had to buy the bolts from the NH dealer. He had them in stock. BobG in VA
