For 5 years I've used a Hypro 6500C model PTO pump with a 3PH sprayer. There are arrows cast on the housing next to the IN and OUT ports indicating the direction for PTO shaft rotation. The direction of the arrows match the rotation of my tractor's PTO...clockwise as you look at the shaft from the back of the tractor.

I've just "upgraded" to an XL model of the 6500. I just noticed the arrows show for rotation to be counterclockwise, which my tractor can't do. Does anybody know if it matters which way the PTO rotates with respect to pump function? Do any small tractors that would use such a pump have counterclockwise rotation of the PTO? I thought all small tractors' PTOs ran clockwise. I'm confused. Thanks for any help.

According to Hypro's website, the 6500 series models are standard counterclockwise rotation, but clockwise is available. If you purchased from a dealer, I would take it back and ask them to order the correct rotation. While you may possibly make it work by hooking it up backward, IMO it would not work as well, if at all. Here is a link to the 6500 series:

If you have the instructions and a press you should be able to press the rotor out of the bearings and reverse the rotor so it changes rotation.

The rotor within the pump is the determining factor for rotation. If it is possible to reverse it your problems are solved. I believe the pump will work rotating the wrong direction but it will never reach rated output.
