Has anyone used a 12" Speeco Standard duty auger and a 12" Heavy Duty Speeco auger. I know the HD has double flights but it takes the same size shear pins. What would be the advantage of the HD over the standard. I have a 9" standard duty and am going to buy a 12" Monday be it standard or HD. Would the HD make digging easier? Standard 12" is $134.oo. HD is $220. If it makes a big difference I would like to know because I'll get the HD. I have rocks, Clay etc that I have augering w/ my standard duty 9" but bust a lot of shear pins. Opinions Please..........

What is the purpose of the double flights then? Has to be more than just add weight to the auger..

I just found a web site explaining the double flight augers.
The Double Flight Auger has two flights on the auger set directly across from each other, allowing the auger to make contact with the material twice per revolution instead of once. This moves the material out of the way faster and leaves less behind with better results. Worth the $100 dollar difference??

Thanks for the reply but too late. I bought the HD 12" @ TSC for $220. The 14" was a good deal but with the $33.00 shipping it brought it to about the same amount. The HD has double flights and a little heavier...

Too late, sorry. I had a 12" speeco at home already too, when my friend found the Northern 14". I looked in to it, and took the Speeco back. I went to the Northern store, bought it from them, paid for it there and then, including tax, and it was shipped free to my house about a week later. I believe the lower half is double flight.

I'm no expert, but, it seems to me that with one flight cutting into the ground the auger would cause side thrust pushing the auger off-center. A second flight would create its own side thrust in the opposite direction making for a smoother operation.

I have a 9" single flight and it wobbles back and forth slightly but still got the job done. I'll let yous' know how the 12" double flight works soon as the mud turns to ground once again around here..
