I'm wondering how often you've sharpened your chipper blades. I've done mine once. It's starting to dull again after many hours.

So, I ordered a new blade from the dealer. It's $57! This is for my MacKissic TPH-122. Thus my interest in knowing how many times you can sharpen them. The ones on my old TroyBilt used to get kinda rounded off on one side. Generally was able to sharpen them about 2 to 3 times before they got too mishapen.

I sharpen mine by holding them against the side of the grinding wheel, and lightly.

I suspect one could get quite a few sharpenings out of them if taken to a machine shop that knows what they're doing. Eventually, the blade would get too thin to the side of the screws and need replacing.

Any experience out there?

Dull blades are hard on the machine, so keep them sharp.

HI RALPH,
I change mine when it stopps feeding well,if i have to help stuff go through, its time for new blades.
To sharpen,i clamp my 9 inch grinder to the workbench and with my homemade tool holder[with correct angle] in a vise .It works pretty slick, and they work like new.Easy does it,dont overheat them. This is my way, most will send them out,i like my way cause its FREE. I keep an extra set in my tractor boxin case i hit something on the job Heres a pic

That's a pretty slick, but simple outfit.

I found out from a fellow master gardener that one of our local hardward stores will sharpen them. They send them out to a machine shop east of here. It's the same hardware store where I get my chain saw blades done. Will see what the charge is.

I put the new blade on this afternoon. The old one was really nicked up.

Checked the hammers again. Fantastic. They still look like new. The MacKissic has 50% more hammers than my TroyBilt had. Suspect they may be harder, too.

Alan,
I like your sharpener! Inexpensive and works well.
