I am looking for advice on a heavy duty shredder. I have 60 acres mostly covered with 1-2 inch sweetgum. There is a lot of 3-4 inch sweetgum that I am planning to leave so I want to selectively thin. And a lot of heavy brush.

I have narrowed it down to a bush hog with a 110 hp gearbox or a more heavy duty bush hog.

Woods seems to have a good 150hp model. And rhino.

Brown Manufacturing blades and cutter are a little too expensive.

I want something that will stand up to a lot of abuse and cut well.

Replying to my own post...

I just saw the thread two below.

Answers most of my questions.

I can get a bush hog 276 for 1800 brand new. May just try that if I can't get a brown to at least look at.

will work it with a mahindra 6500

Well, I have an old Brown tree cutter that I really, really like. I have a 40 hp MF 1260, minimum horsepower for my cutter is supposedly 50, but I am very satisfied with what I can do. I have to proceed very slowly ie the lowest gear I have in my 16 speed box, but that is plenty fast for me. I can take down a 6-8 inch pine and maybe a 3-4 inch oak with it. Anything any bigger I wouldn't want to mess with the tree cutter anyway - time for the chain saw.

Attached are a couple of before and after photos, the first day I had it last summer.

Hope this helps,

Barry

I've heard that Brown Manufacturing was bought out by another outfit. Probably won't be a problem but...

Another thing I've heard is that the replacement blades are very expensive.

But everyone says it is a great product.

Be glad to and nope it ain't a standard bush hog. Attached is a photo of my old one and here is a link to Brown's site for their tree cutters. Brown Tree Cutter

You back into the tree, pushing the bar in, which exposes the blades. It is good to be wearing at least safety glasses because they throw debris in all directions, including back at you. I wouldn't operate mine within a 100 yards of anyone or any buildings or cars. Its on my list of things to do to get a face shield to wear when I 'm running it.

Oh, and the new ones are way not cheap.
