I just bought a 3ph disc harrow that I would like to modify. I would like to add some type of crumbler or drag to the back of it to break up the soil a little finer and smooth it out more. Have any of you guys done this and if so do you have pics? I would also welcome ideas.

You could make a row or two of teeth similar to what I built as a harrow.

Or, like I added a pulverizer roller to my box blade for seedbed prep. When I use the roller, I don't engage the bb.

Post a pic of what you do pls.

The guy who sharecrops several 10-acre hay fields near my place uses what looks like a Cat D-4 to pull a huge tandem disk harrow. He hooks on a homemade drag consisting of a telephone pole that has about 10 feet of chain link fence attached. Disks and drags at the same time. Works really neat.

I have a drag with fence posts and some 5/8 chain (added three more posts and three loops of chain after photo) that works pretty good (mostly use it for finish smoothing and breaking/spreading horse droppings) but the ring roller really does a good job breaking the clods up and setting seed.

I saw a mod on a used disc harrow today at ASC that was simmilar to Mr. Jimmi's rake shown here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/3886/sort/1/size/medium/cat/551/page/.

It was designed to float, or it could be locked in the up position. I may lean towards something like that. First, I should hook my drag to the disc and see what it will do. But it is so long that it will still be in contact with the ground when I am turning. It is a section chain link fence about 4'x5' with a pipe attaced to the front and another across the rear. It works fairly well by itself. I dont want to pull it alone, because I think I will have wheel impressions in this soft dirt. I will try to get some images posted tomorrow.
