Picked up a set of discs at an auction with some weights ( laying on the ground behind the discs in the pic. ). What does the small steering wheel do ?. It turns slightly but doesn't move anything. ???

It might turn because of the rust, but it almost looks like a really long top link. The wheel is simply the thing to turn to extend or retract it. Try hosing the whole thing down with WD-40 or something and beating it with a hammer to loosing up the rust. Maybe it will turn more then.

Either that, or you've been had because it used to have an engine and seat!:D

Looks to me like it's the adjustment to vary the angle between the two rows of discs. Most discs have some type of adjustment for this purpose.

Maybe the adjustment mechanism is jammed with rust. Or maybe there's a lock bolt that has to be loosened before the adjusting mechanism can move. Or both.

Shouldn't there be another set of discs to go with those angled the other direction.

It does kinda look like a PART of an implement. Perhaps you could post pics of the linkage/attachment to the disc platform, the telescoping part, and the steering wheel thingy as closeups. That may help.

I would agree with flusher It is a adjustment for the angle between the two gangs of disk blades. The closer the blades are to being parallel the less they will dig in.

Put some 90wt on it, That look like and old set of mule disk .if it is they are nice works real good.It don't have another set of discs to go the other direction.

This disc has been modified so much I don't think the original intent is still possible. It can't change the pitch of the gangs because the two gangs are now welded together. It can't raise or lower the rear gang because the hitch has been welded rigid. I think it's just functioning as a top link brace now and without further modification, will have no impact on the use of the disc.

It looks like the disk was made from a larger pull type unit.

Perhaps at one time it was a 'Fast Hitch' style for an IHC tractor (their answer to the 3pt in the 1950's). If so, then that wheel would be the fore/aft leveler - extend th shaft to lower the rear, shorten to raise it. It is important a 3pt disk is level. The 'Fast Hitch' had no top link, so this type of leveling was needed.

If there is no give or hinge in the 3pt parts welded on now, then it is only a brace now, & the wheel is just along for the ride.
