I'm going to need offset disc for foodplot work. Rocky ground with loam.
I'm thinking 6 foot disc is biggest that can get through some of the trails between plots. I guess a good set of discs like that would weigh 1000# or so. Any thoughts on how much HP need for 4 WD CUT??

Check this website.

38 - 42 - 63 Series Offset Disc - Monroe Tufline

I think the table gives the info you need.

If I'm not mistaken, offset discs take more horsepower than the symmetric tandem disc.

My neighbor discs his hayfield with a 5.5-foot tandem disc behind a 28-hp (engine) Ford 8N gas tractor. He puts an engine block on the disc frame to get it to bite. He disced his 10 acre hayfield in about 8 hours.

I have a 45-hp (engine) MF-135 diesel that I'll used to pull a 6-7 foot tandem disc.

True offset disc's are actually a primary tillage tool as opposed to a tandem disc being a secondary tillage tool by design. They're meant to dig, not finish a seedbed. a GOOD offset is heavy. And even with that, sometimes weight still needs to be added to get the desired results. They have quite an appetite for hp. For 6', I'd guess you would need 50 to 60 hp at a minimum. Weight of the tractor will be important too.

One thing to consider. With an offset disc, as well as any tandem disc, you can use the hitch (or the hydraulics in the case of a drawn disc) to "gauge" the depth to control how much "drawbar load", making it just a little bit easier to pull. Multiple passes to get deeper.

i pull a 4 footer behind a 30 hp Kubota in 4wd. Look for a used drag unit and put new blades on it. Does anyone even make a quality drag offset disc for 30 hp these days, and how much do they cost?
