I am picking up a new Bush Hog 650 Backhoe on Tuesday. This is my first backhoe, so I am learning as I go. I am reading through the manual and it's telling me to fill the reserivor with MOTOR OIL, 10W40 API "SF/SG" classification. Does this mean regular oil, like Shell or Pennz oil you can get from a auto parts store? I had to read it a couple of times to make sure that I was reading it right!
I thought it would use hydraulic fluid not regular motor oil!

Well if it is motor oil you use, what brand of oil do you folks use?

After looking on other forums, in particluar, a fourm dealing with lubricants, I found that using motor oil in FEL and backhoes is common. I guess it's a cheaper way to go, especially when you catch a sale at Kragen's. After rebate the oil costs .99 cents a quart for 10w40 Pennzoil and 10W40 Shell for
.59 cents a quart. I need 7gal. (28 quarts).

The Korean backhoes I import says that 15w40 can be used.

I don't think it will or would cause any damage to the hydraulics.

I recommend and install AW32 hydraulic oil.

The 10w40 may take a little longer to warm up.

Today's hydraulic oils are basically a 10W30 or similar engine oil, but with anti-squeak and anti-foam additives. I just use the same transmission/hydraulic fluid as in my tractor as it possesses these attributes. It certainly does the job very well, and it is one less oil that I need to keep on hand. Some of these backhoe manufacturers will also call for ATF to be used. It also will work well.

Good luck with the new backhoe. One thing I like about Bushhog is the amount of material they make available online, such as owners and parts manuals.

My 1964 Cat D-6 dozer uses 30 wt. oil for all engine , trans, and hyd. functions. 90 wt. in the track drives. real simple.

My Woods 1050 backhoe says the same thing. Personally I run the same hyraulic fluid I run in the tractor since I have it.
