I love the Unimog!! Is it gas or diesel? They are pretty rare here in the states

It is a 1,8 liter diesel, 40 hp

If you are going to make a splitter yourself, remember to make the ram high enough, so that you can split two smaller logs on top of each other in one stroke. Same thing with a bigger log that you give one split, returning it, turning the split log a half turn, (held together as one) and splitting both parts in one stroke.

I didnt say chase after. It is harder to control a moving log and the ram at the same time. There is inherent danger there unless you just let the log fall. If the log is large you must split it again. You either control it while it splits while moving or pick it up and reposition it. Both have inherent risk and wear and tear on you. Thelogs that store energy and fly when they split are the little ones. For me these are rare and are recognizable as they flex while being split. Moving wood splitters are ok with a partner. Stationary wood can be completed and on wheels in a single step by one operator.

Well now there you do have a point. But my splitter is a 'detent' valve, i.e., remains in whatever position I leave it so I have both hands free. do NOT recommend that tho, it is a safety hazard.

Rarely do I have to pick up the stuff on my side of the splitter and again I wouldn't have to do it ever if I had an in-feed table. I do have to do it on the off side when it still needs another split or two but there again that is due to the lack of an off-feed table, not the design. I
The stuff I split is much too large to flex. Good dry stuff tends to 'snap' before the wood even reaches the 'wings'.

I am curious. Before you said you could avoid wood being thrown at you or hitting you or something like that by the proper set-up. How does that work?
It is still coming back towards the ram/works/operator no matter what as near as I can tell.

Hi Bob,

Not sure where in New York you live, but I purchased a splitter from American MSR in up-state New York (outside of Watertown) and really like the splitter.

Log splitter, wood conveyor and firewood processor by American CLS

I bought the model AM-24HH an it included the 13" wheels, fenders, safety chains and the four way splitter. It has worked great for me and I just finished spitting about 10 cords of wood with it.

Right now with the Honda engine it is selling for right around $3,000 with the Briggs Intek 6.5 HP it is around $2,400, so not cheap worth looking at.
