I bought a new JD 790 and while I opted for a Woods backhoe, I stuck with the Deere Model 70 loader. I am very disappointed with the loader. I have already had the loader pop out of the mounts while using the loader to drag some loose soil backwards and it seems very underpowered.
My bigggest complaint is the Model 70 loader bucket. It stinks. Is so vertical in angle you can't get under any brush piles or large limbs. It's like trying to load with a dozer blade. The bucket bottom is so short, I can't slip under individual flat rocks without them flopping out of the bucket. The front angle of the bucket has no "notch" to locate and carry poles or large limbs so they slide around as the tractor pitches, sometimes falling off or shifting balance and swinging dangerously towards the driver.
Does anyone know of an affordable replacement bucket that can be installed, one that looks and works like on the JD 4xxx series tractors? Thanks.

Noticed the same thing when I purchased my JD 790 almost 2 years ago. I had the task of moving a hillside from one side of my drive to the other (need to increase the swing area so as to be able to get our crew cab pickup in without having to back up into the state road), bucket wouldn't dig worth crap, got the advice from this board to add a tooth bar. Did so, about $265, this improved the digging plus being able to get rocks into bucket and having them stay there, and a better ability to carry brush. Entended teeth do help. What I really would like to do is to add a grapple to the bucket, I have sketched out several designs, but haven't got around to building it. I already have added auxiliary hydraulics for TNT so I have controls for any hydraulics. If you are looking for buckets, check with your local skid steer dealers, skid steers seem to have a few options as far as bucket design.
