Here are some photos of the dolly I built last week.

1. Chipper sitting on dolly. All lumber is scrap.

2. View of support post in position. I added a 3/16" shim at the top to fill the space fully. A U-shaped notch cut with a jigsaw allows for the bolt at the top and a hole allows a Cat. 0 hitch pin to secure the post at the top. A gate bolt secures the bottom of the post.

3. This view of the dolly shows the half-lap joints on the frame built from 2 x 6 boards. This is topped with a piece of 3/4" ply. The retaining pieces are on top of the ply.

4. Here the retaining pieces are visible. The ends and the interior leg retainers stops are 2 x 2s. The wedge stops are true 2 x 3s cut at 41 degrees. The slot stops for the post are 2 x 4s.

5. The bottom view shows the wheels. The extra wheel beneath the post support slot is not really necessary. When I lifted the chipper with the 3ph, the chipper lifted at an angle. I noticed that if I were to set it on the dolly with the 3ph, the feet would not sit flat. I did some little trig calculations and realized that putting 2" casters at the front end and 2.5" casters on the rear would give the dolly surface almost exactly the same amount of tilt as the chipper feet at that height. The swivel casters came from Northern Tool.

6. The post alone shows the shim screwed in place, the U-slot for the bolt on the top link point of the chipper, and the Cat. 0 hitch pin. Post is a 2 x 4.

Looks great Tom! I just built a quick platform for my JD snowblower - makes it much easier to move around.

How do you like that DR chipper? What are you powering it with?

Looks nice Tom - thanks for the pics. Get out there and give that chipper a run!

Looks good, much more fancy than mine I made for my Mac. I just put some 2x4s around the edges of a piece of plywood and slapped 4 dollies on underneath. The Mac is fairly well balanced, but your tongue thing is a good way to keep it from tilting. It bopped me in the head once when I was hitching it up.

Thanks, Tom. Simple and it does the job. I'll get started building one for my chipper this weekend. You will like the way it works. I run mine off of an old Ford 2000, 24 HP. Works great!

Because of a suggestion from another poster, I used several pallets with casters at the corners. The larger the caster the easier they roll but the higher they are off the floor.

I added some material to one pallet to support the front of the box scraper. My spray rig sits on a 3 pt fork which sits on a furniture dolly. I used a furniture dolly under the front of my 4 LX "bush hog". I also have my 7' landscape rake on a pallet dolly. Make it a whole lot easier to move around, saves a lot of space and makes installing a breeze. Using the pallets eliminated the construction of specific dollies. Time will tell how they hold up. Out of the weather in a barn on concrete floor they should last forever.

Dang, the DR Chipper isn't very heavy. I just grab mine are drag it from one side of the garage to the other. Its kinda Tippy, but not heavy by any means.
I sure do love it for making chips for around my Trees! :D

Well I'm quite happy for you. When I was young, I was a professional mountain guide and became a trainer to new guides. I weighed 140 back then and often carried well over a hundred pounds in a backpack a good 15 miles per day on solid packed snow at 11,000-12,000 ft. elevation where the O2 saturation is not so high. That was over a quarter century ago though and since then I did a lot of work building my own log house, cutting holes into concrete density hardpan with a pick and all kinds of other stuff. At my age, my back ain't what it used to be, and I don't see it reverting to its former shape in the foreseeable future. I do like using my brain instead of my muscles when possible these days and I just like building things. That dolly cost every bit of $10 to build and I had a lot more fun building it than any teenager could have with $10. I hope your back stays young and strong forever and I hope you keep having fun dragging your chipper around while I have fun rolling mine around! Cheers!
