I've seen adapters to convert 3-pt to a receiver hitch. I've read that you shouldn't tow much weight suspended from 3-pt due to risk of overturning.
Is there an adapter that readily converts draw bar to receiver hitch short of welding one on??

ummmm
My bar has a hole, I put a 2" ball on it
done

just slide that in and out and lock it in and hook up the trailer
Easy as pie.

The advantage of the 3point based receiver is that you back up to the trailer, raise the 3pt and then move it around. It's for short distance moving, not really towing.

I am not aware of any, but I can tell you I use the BadRiver 3PH adaptor and love it. Its like anything else in tractoring, weight distribution and know your limitations. I keep my FEL on for front weight, and always pull from a low position. The BadRiver (and some others) have the chain to keep the hitch from rising up unexpectedly. I have pulled some very heavy loads with my TC-24D on level ground, with no problems as long as I use my head.

The overturning issue is certainly a concern, especially if you pull from a high postion and give the load a lot of leverage on the tractor.

The advantages of the 3PH adaptor style are many, but I especially like being able slide the ball under the trailer coupler and just raise it up to connect, no more jacking the trailer.

I purchased a 3 point hitch adapter for my tractor, mainly to be able to move our boat around and haul the wood splitter out into the woods. Works fine for me. I did try to use the standard bar with a locking device, but it just didn't seem to fit right, at least not on my tractor.

I initially thought that the simple obvious solution was as suggested by poster above, just nut the ball on the draw bar. Couldn't be easier. In my case, that doesn't give much leeway between tractor and trailer. If I can figure out how to only pull in a straight line, I'll be OK. It's those inevitable turns that are the problem. I guess a longer drawbar would help. I'll look into the adapter referenced above. The safety chain to the draw bar--is that long enough for the back of trailer to bottom out if front comes up. Would a shorter safety chain prevent the front from rising up??

Well, you can't make really ridiculous moves, but it will turn faster than with a pickup. I use mine all the time to move the trailer around the yard. Quicker and faster than a pickup.
I've never jackknifed it.

I use an EZMover hitch and I'm very pleased with it. If you go to the TBN Store, you'll find them listed there along with a TBN discount. To use an EZMover, you'll need a 3pt drawbar similar to this one. I bought mine on eBay for $10. EZMover bolts to the drawbar. I use some of the other holes in the drawbar for hooks and rings. I just pop the hitch off my truck and pop it into the EZMover reciever. I pull either my splitter or my 12K dump trailer without any problems.

You set it at whatever height you want, it is then rigid and can't move up or down unless the entire tractor comes off the ground. I consider a critical part of any 3PH adapter from a safety standpoint. The BadRiver and EZMover both have it, very similar items from what I can see. Turning is very easy, especially backing up because the ball is so far back.

I have hitches on the front of both my tractors. Don't have to take anything off the 3ph. Now, if I just had some type of trailer......
