yesterday i went to repair a gravel driveway for a friend and could not hardly penitrate the gravel due to the ice which had not melted yet. Here in Tulsa we got about 4-6 inches of sleet over a 3 day period and even though the temps have been up around 50 it still has not melted away in the wooded areas. Last night I spent hours looking up different tooth bars and decided to build my own. I am about 2 miles from my Kubota dealer and since i needed new teeth for my backhoe I looked into what they had to build my own bar. they only had one shank and I wanted five so I spent the next 3 hours driving to every tractor and equipment dealer in the area to try and find what I was looking for, the second place I went told me about H & L tooth company which was on the other side of town from where I was. To make this long day short i ended up there around noon after going to all the other tractor shops and was able to buy 5 shanks, 5 teeth, and 5 pins for $191.00 bucks. I allready had a worn out grader blade to make my piece for the shanks to weld to. Looking around the net I noticed the beveled steel plate the more expensive teeth bars were using, i suspect that they are using a new piece of stock just like the one i was using that was old and worn down. You can find these plates at John Deere industrial equipment dealers, the bolt down to the front "scraper edge" of a large loader. I cut mine down to a very tight fit inside my bucket, tight enough I had to grind on it to get it to fit, I did this to maximise strength. My thoughts are "if it moves it will bend or break". I welded all my shanks in place and welded the bolt on portion with 1/2 inch steel plates that measure 3"x3". since i only own a 110 volt mig i welded each weld then ground it down and made a second pass. Throuh a coat of primer on and came out a couple hours later to test it out. My back yard is a hill side that is full of sandstone, I wasnt at it 5 minutes and was absolutly amazed at how it would rip the rocks out of the ground and leave the dirt and I was still able to "back pull" and level. If you own a small tractor and work it in any kind of rock you have to buy or build one of these. its amazing !!!!!!!!!!.
