I'm currently looking to buy a mechanical thumb for my JD 448 hoe. My dealer quoted me $1200 for a Sun down VAT-200 thumb. This does not include the welding. Does anyone know how to find the manufacture of this thumb? I've tried google but no success. Do any of you guys have weld on thumbs on your hoes? If so what brand and where can I find out purchasing info.

Thanks

that price sounds high to me. I got a price from woods for a factory mechanical thumb for $600.

Yes, that price is high for sure, considering I just spent almost 8k on the hoe.
He had a smaller size thumb there to see and it was very well made. But I feel I can find it cheaper on my own. But I can't find the manufacture hence the post.

Hey Matt,
There are lots of posts about thumbs here, just do a search.
For a regular stationary thumb I think that price you got is extremely high. I think you can get them on eBay or from suppliers here for 3 to 4 hundred bucks all day long. Do you do your own welding or will you need to have that done? There are also "bolt on" thumbs in that price range. dfkrug here I know makes and sells both kinds for his backhoes and others. They are reasonably priced too and can be varied in positioning. Pretty nice stuff.
You should send him a PM.

I knew I came to the right place! This is the feedback I was looking for. I just want to make sure the thumbs is perfectly sized to the bucket. As for the welding, that will be done buy a coworker (welder) for some electrical work ( I'm an electrician) so I just need the thumb. I want one with multiple positions.

So back to the original post. Does anyone know of the sun down brand? I really didn't want to buy site unseen?
