I need a chain harrow that will be towed behind a 2x4 ATV. I've seen pictures of the ones they make for ATV's and they look cheap. Who makes a better quality harrow?

I've seen the ones they have at Northern Tool for tractors. They look well made and strong. Do you think a 4 foot wide harrow is to big for the ATV?

Thanks

Might check out Kovar Sales also. They make a 4x4ft model and ship UPS. I have been browsing their product vs. what local dealers have. FWIW, I don't think a 4x4ft chain harrow will strain an ATV even slightly.

Tractor Supply should have one. I've pulled a 6X8 with my ATV with no problems.

Thanks for the replies.

How well do they smooth tilled dirt say about 2 inches deep for seeding when you flip them over/spikes up ?

I'm wondering now if maybe that cheap $99 ATV harrow might be better since I will be tilling the ground first. I have to till nutrients in the ground first. I have dead dirt. LOL

Another question. Are the plastic lawn rollers any good or are the steal the better way to go? I'm looking at a 4 foot plastic model. Says 500lbs when filled.

Thanks again!

If you want to see one of the best quality chain harrows go to:

Wingfield's Flexible Chain Harrows - "The All-American Harrow"

I have a Wingfield chain harrow - it's really well made.

Randy,

When I'm reworking one of my paddocks, I usually till it (not deep), spread seed & fertilizer, and then drag it. I used to flip the drag over but quit because I couldn't see any difference. I usually don't roll unless it's for a lawn or disked hay field. A steel roller will last longer.

Randy,

I went the cheap route and made my drag from a length of oak and some cyclone fence that I was given. I added a length of chain to pull it and I was done.

One of the thing that I really like about the log drag is how well it moved dirt. It will knock down a high spot and fill in low spots. With a little practice, you can get some amazing results.

The first picture shows mine.

Second pictures shows a litte dirt that's built up after pulling it.

Third picture gives you an idea of what it can do.

The problem I have with those chain harrows is they pretty much just ride over the surface of the soil. You spend allot of money for a tool that only makes a finished grade look pretty. It won't do much to get you a finished grade.

Eddie

Lay two wood skids side by side, nail a few pieces of scrap across them, chain them kind of high to the back of your quad/tractor so the front end lifts up a little when pulled, works like a charm, the log and fence works well also, or just a chunk of pole barn timber, bedsprings, etc.

I pull a 6x6 chain harrow (actually 2 3x6 sections) behind my 500cc ATV
works awesome, it's not even straining hard.

for leveling ground, you flip it over to no spikes and run around and poof it's done.

for ripping up ground a little for seeding, you put it on the agressive (spikes down and forward) and that works too
then for getting the old winter crap and shuffling it up, you put it on pascifist. (spikes down and back)

about $500, any tractor dealer.

Thanks for the help everyone. I picked up a King Kutter 4' drag harrow from Atwoods today. The thing is pretty amazing how well it works. I tried it out in all 3 positions and don't think I'll be using the spikes foward position anytime soon again. ;) It's a ripper for sure. Atwoods has them for $214.00. It is as well made as some I have seen for $350.

King Kutter Incorporated

Thannks again.
