Tractor
Early 1949 Ford 8N
1949 8N tractor. Looking at getting a 6 foot disk harrow.
What is the smallest possible garden plot I could use it in.

I just plowed a spot about 36 by 60, twice as big as last year.
We don't make a big garden. But it could get bigger.
And I'd like to have a disk in my list of implements.

But really, how small a plot can I disk up.

Thanks.

You would need a plot a bit more than twice the turning radus of your tractor. This will allow you to turn from the middle to the outside of the garden without tearing up the lawn, if you have a 3pt disk, then if you have an area to turn around on the ends of the garden, then mabey two times the with of the disks. This might push too much soil to the outer edges though. Mike

Hey Pooh, I have a six foot 3-pt disc and my gardens aren't very big either. It's not ideal, but I've worked up a narrow garden by pulling the disc from one end to the other, then raising the disc, backing up, and doing it again. So I guess the narrowest garden you could disc would be about six feet.:D Length - anything you want.

Also, by raising the disk and then turning in a biggish radius, I've been able to turn around on grass without doing much damage. Admittedly, the grass by my garden isn't anything special to start with, but it worked OK.

I just disked up a 30X30 garden and have disked up smaller areas for grass and I have a 5' disk.
A tiller would be better but if you don't have one then you gotta use what you have.

Thanks. I got a lead on a 6 foot disk that is almost in my price range.
Don't know yet if it is 3 point or pull behind. Waiting for pictures.

Can't use a tiller cause an 8N is geared too fast.
Thought about getting a tiller anyway and leaving the transmission
in neutral and using an electric winch to pull the tractor along.
I think it would work. Would like to rent a tiller and try it.

I don't mind plowing up a bigger area than I need for planting.
The grass always grows back. No matter what I do I can't kill it.
