Tractor
John Deere 4320
I am in the process of trying to purchase a John Deere 4320 and would like to get a Farmi Winch. The question is, will the Farmi JL351P be adequate. My use will not be commercial. This tractor is stated to have 40 hp at the PTO.

Also, any suggestions on the purchase of this in the way of options etc. would be great! Thanks!

You may want to consider moving up to the 501 model as the 351 is rated max 40hp. I believe the 501 is a little heavier duty than the 351 too. The 501 has a rear blade standard, also notched tool tray on the rear blade for skidding multiple logs and holding choker chains, and also has chain saw holder which is not a huge benefit, but is handy for carrying shorter bar saws.

Accessories - key hole sliders if they don't come with your winch, Skidding chains with choker hooks, and self releasing snatch block - pricey but worth it if you need to pull off angle.

Add a grapple to your FEL and you are set

Good advice. I can't remember how much more the 501 was, but I am glad I went to it for my 2120. I think it was in the $6-700 range.

Having owned the smallest Farmi winch for over 25 years that has been on two tractors one 28 hp. and the other 30 hp. I can say it has not failed me yet. A friend has the next size up on a little larger tractor that he has used fir the last five years withoput a problem.

There is no doubt that the larger tractor and the bigger winch can pull more. The larger winch also provides more ballast on the 3PH. Shouuld the price difference between the two not be a major issue your tractor can handle the bigger winch no problem.

Even though your use is not commercial the type of work you want to do with it may still make the larger unit the right one. Large hardwood logs weigh more than softwood. Hardwood tops pull a little harder than softwood trees.

With either model you can not go wrong.

Also wanted to add, because of the weight and narrow blade on the 501, I sometimes find it more useful to grade with it instead of the larger backblade I have.

Hmmm, right now my local JD dealership thought the 351 was fine and actually has experience with it on larger tractors. I've heard that even this size is pretty heavy duty. Of course price is the driver of this decision, and if price was not a factor I would certainly go with the 501. I was just trying to get some more feed back on the 351, it's performance, and use in its max pto hp range.

If you go with the 351, get the one with the blade - more lateral stability IMO than the outrigger model.

Does your dealer have both the 351 and the 501 in stock? If so, maybe you can try each one and see what works best for you. If he doesn't have both in stock, then maybe that's why he is pushing the 351. :) Either way you should be OK, I prefer to have implements that are rated on the heavier duty side.

Another TBNer, AndyMA, has had both models - I'm sure he will be able to tell you what you need to know on the 351.

Yes, I am thinking of ordering the JL351P which has the blade...I wouldn't even consider the other type.

Ya, there was a TBNer that purchased a Kubota L4630 I think...called it Tetters or something. I believe he went through the same struggle with the two sizes. I believe an L4630 is very similar in size and HP to the JD 4320.

I have a 351 on a century 40pto tractor and I am very satisfied with it. I have moved trees where I couldn't lift the trunk up with the 3pt after I draged it to the winch. It would lift the front of the tractor and I had wt in the loader. It will do what you want it to do.
