jeffinsgf, Great info, thanks.
That is different than what I had envisioned. But still sounds like what I need. Poor man's backhoe. :D Some of the manufactures advertise there scoop as a tree spade, although most of these tree spades are closed at rear. I was originally looking at the bobcat digger because of the round scoop at the rear, but if as you say, it really doesn't make that much difference, then I will probably go with the virnig u-blade because I would really like my local dealer to have some more of my money. Actually the cost seems to be a wash as they are all about $1k by the time they get to my place. These diggers come in different sizes from 16" being the smallest to 36" the largest. I have been considering the 24" or 30". What would you say as to size? Larger or smaller make much difference? Really appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Harley,
Jeff is correct in that the first one is a Bobcat "digger". Just follow Jeff's link. The second is a Virnig "u-blade"
A third possibility is Midsota Manufacturing, who call theirs a tree spade. There are others that are similar, but these things are hard to find, unless you know what the manufacture is calling them. From what I have seen, i don't think they would do well on 3pt hitch, as not enough tilt to use for digging. My original thought for this project was to use a 3pt "pond scoop". I think this would work fine for moving dirt, but same problem as my fel bucket, to wide for actually digging very deep, and not for a ditch to lay black plastic pipe in.
All thoughts are appreciated especially now before I pop for the thing. Thanks.

Joel,
Thanks, I have seen this in previous post's but don't think it would work as well as the open back design. I think this would be much hander on a skid steer than a FEL, as the steer is much more maneuverable. It would work well for digging stumps, rocks, etc. but I think the open back would work better for digging a ditch, or swale. Quite a few threads of people who have used this for successfully removing stumps. JMHO Thanks for input.

Hi, I built one of these for a bobcat, I added a flat plate at a angle of 30 degrees to the ground and 45 degrees to horizontal, think of another V taking off at a angle to the ground and direction of travel, when dragged backwards it deflects the spoils out of the trench and deposits in a pile to the side, it will dig a trench 20 inches deep by 18 wide "U" shaped bottom, when it warms up and the snow melts I will take a few pictures. It will also remove a 4 foot pine tree with root ball, only issue is you have to stab in the opposite side to loosen the soil around.

laurencen,
Would love to see pics. My thought was that dragging backwards would clean out ditch, but jeffinsgf says that it isn't too good for cleaning out that way. maybe I can add your modification?:D Thanks for input.:)
