A while back I happened to come across this plow. I had inquired if in the poor cell phone photo it had looked any good. Now that I've learned a little more about what to look for in an old plow I went back out there to look at it again. It's still there. From the little that I know it appears to be in very good shape. It actually has a tailwheel. The coulters and shares don't appear to have much wear at all! The landslide looks excellent. I don't know how much they're asking for it but I'm aiming to find out now that I've gotten a closer look. I was wondering if anyone here would know what this plow may be worth. It appears to probably be a 3x14 but I can't say for sure. I forgot to measure it today in all my excitement from taking pictures. With seven photos I hope I can give all necessary viewpoints.

FarmWithJunk. . . . .any thoughts??

Those are Plow Chief points. I'd stay away from it from an "after buy" perspective. They don't make those anymore.....(especially the little "pointy" point at the front. NOS will cost sometimes $85 each, if you can find them). But do as you feel you need to, after all I just own a couple of those...in FastHitch format. BobG in VA

PS: They do plow well when the points/shares new/in good shape, but you about have to cut them off if you ever need to change them as the bolt holding the point on is on the bottom and usually has been worn to the point that a wrench wont' do...

What he said....

There's maybe 100 or 150 acres worth of plowing in those points, provided you don't break any. Then it's time to punt. Good plow, ESPECIALLY in hard ground. Just make sure you don't wear it out.

I'm not quite sure I'm following you guys. Let me see if I got this straight. You're saying the plow is in great shape right now. That it's a good heavy-duty plow. But that the points are almost impossible to replace for two reasons: (1) can't find 'em anymore, and (2) difficult or nearly impossible to remove. Is that correct?

Well, I doubt if I would ever put another 100 acres on it in my lifetime. I think it may be worth looking into how much they want for it. If I decide to get it I guess I'd better hope I never have to replace one.

Thanks for your help.

Well, you didn't say how much you were going to use the plow. Look at this way, if you buy the plow and only mean to plow your garden in the spring/fall, you'll be OK for many moons to come, BUT, if you intend on serious stuff (ie. 50 acres at a time), your money would be better spent on a Ford 101 3 btm or similar. Having said that, if you break a Plow Chief point you can always figure a way to have a 2 btom plow rather than a 3 bottom...BobG in VA

I wasted a lot of time yesterday giving you a lot of details and I don't see it here! Oh well, just a quick version, that plow was more then likely built in the late 60's early 70's at the latest. It does have a trip mechanism in case you hit something unmoveable. The parts for those bottoms are expensive but they were replaced by the Super Chief bottom and with a change of the frog all the new parts bolt on. It looks like a good plow but have them pick it up with a lift and check your trip mechanisms for slop as well as the pivot pins for fredom to allow a trip in case it's been sitting. You do have a lot of tractor for the plow but they were built solid.
