I have been looking at planters for a small garden (3/4 acre) and some food plots for deer and turkey. The planters I have been looking at are the Covington planter with the fertilizer hopper and is mounted on a cultivator. The price is about $995 plus shipping in the amount of around $125; for a total of $1,120. The other planter is a Yetter 71 single row planter, suggested retail on the planter is $818; the accessories to mount the Yetter on a three point hitch (toolbar, U-bolts etc.) the total comes to $1.390 suggested retail. I am leaning towards the Covington because it comes with the cultivator and the fertilizer hopper. What is the quality of the Covington and the Yetter? What are your thoughts?

Covington planters sell, so they must be able to do the job, but from actual "hands on experience" the #71 (be it Yetter or Deere) planters are about as good as they come. I never saw any Covington planters being used ona large scale. However, the Deere #71 (built for Deere on contract by Yetter) were the planter of choice for most seed corn growers for decades. (until air planters took over)

So I can't tell you any reason NOT to buy a Covington planter. But I can whole-heartedly recommend a #71 Flex Planter.

This is pretty much a ditto to what farmwithjunk said. The 71 is a great planter. I have never used a Covington.

I would suggest you look on ebay. There are some great looking used one row 71's in the $400-500 range on ebay.

I have a JD 71 Flexi planter, 2 row version, that I bought completely restored to where it looks brand new. I bought it on Ebay and paid about $800 for the 2 row planter. It does not have the fertilizer dropper, but does have the optional large fiberglass hoppers. The thing works great, is simple enough for a mechanical idiot to use (I am living proof of that), and I would recommend one in a heartbeat. Planter plates are easy to get and inexpensive. I use my to plant sweet corn, bush style green beans and also sunflowers.

kinda late for this post but i can tell anybody looking for planters i watched craigslist found a two row ford cultivator with 4 covington planters 2 were the speedmaster duplex and 2 were the reg duplex all four in good working condition everything there gears chains etc also got the covington sidedresser with the plastic fertilize hopper all this for 900 bucks and they were only 10 min drive from where i live i ve since found a couple more two row outfits but only two planters with two fertilize hoppers for 995 and 1050 bucks i would look around before buying new covington in albany ga approx 40 miles from here quoted me 3500 bucks for a complete two row outfit just cant justify that for a garden or food plot
