I was looking at getting a medium duty cutter for my '99 JD5105. Bushhog says minimum 45hp for the 296 and the tractor is a 40hp. Is this too much cutter for the tractor? Would it be better to get the 295?

I've got a 286 Bush Hog. (Same mower essentially, just older deck design.) I use it primarily on one of 2 tractors. One is 47hp (pto) other is 40hp. Both work just fine in even the heaviest of brush and weeds. 40HP is enough for normal use.

Mornin New2tractors,
I have 5ft Bush Hog 286 and run it fine with a 32hp Diesel, probablly could run a 6ft at times. Im just cutting field grass for the most part !
