I have seen some box blades that have a flap that opens in the back, some that the back wall is fixed and another type that has a rollover feature with a handle..........any advice. I did a search of the BB but did not see a specific answer that addresses the function of these differences.

Thanks

A "fixed" rear cutting edge will prevent the front blade edge from digging in some cases. The movable rear edge will raise up allowing the front blade to work much better. I've owned both types and wouldn't go back to the fixed rear cutting edge for anything. Some people like the fixed blade for its ability to "back-drag" while going forward. Most boxes with movable rear edge have the capability to "pin" the rear edge in place if you so desire. Roll-over boxes are handy SOMETIMES. They shine when doing jobs that require mostly pushing material backwards. No advantage going forward. I've used one once. Didn't care for it personally.

i didnt relize how important weight would be to a BB. My rear blade is a HEAVY duty one so i didnt notice the lack of weight with it.

but when i picked up my light duty (inexpensive) BB, i quickly found it to be lacking in cutting ablity due to its light weight. (modes are in progress to fix said issue)

I'm also in the market for a BB. TSC has KK (or Farm Force) 48" BB XB, but I saw on Northern Tool & equip. site a 48 BB. What's the difference between the BB and XB models? Same price, but the BB is 55# heavier on shipping weight. Is it a little bigger? The description could use a bit more detail.

I believe the XB series is made for subcompact tractors.

I had a box blade with a non-pinable "swinging" rear blade, didn't care much for it, unable to do the back-drag thing. Sold it and bought one with the "fixed" rear blade, now all I have to is adjust the top link so the box is a little up in the front and I can do the back drag thing, gonna be a whole lot nicer when momma lets me get my top/tilt installed!

I suggest it depends upon what you are going to use it for. There are a number of posts with reviews and pictures of numerous bb to take a look at. I use a roll over box blade and would not trade it for anything else. In fact, I just purchased another one from Gannon. The are made to roll over and give various options. You can cut or back drag going forward or backward. The are perhaps most efficient at back filling. Almost like having a small dozer blade. The are of course great for driveways to keep your stone on the drive with the side wall. Once I have cut in my drive, trail, etc. I flip it over and while goining forward back drag the soil. Makes a real nice finish. They do cost a little more, but I think Gannon and bush hog are the only ones that still make the roll over at this point.
