I'm looking at a used Mackissic 12PT-8 for sale. After reading up a lot on pto chippers, I realize this is probably a good match for my small tractor. One thing I noticed is the flywheel and cutter disc was not directly linked to the pto shaft. Is it supposed to be? I could spin the shaft and hold the flywheel still. Would someone with this model explain to me what I might be dealing with to repair? I think it's similar to the TPH-122 model. Are there belts involved? I couldn't take the time to diagnose. It's also missing the PTO shaft and the key way in the exposed shaft looks mushroomed over.

Thanks!

Yes, there is a belt. The belt is a sort of slip-clutch. It slips before bad things happen, but works well the rest of the time. Several members have this chipper/shredder and are pleased with it.

OK I found a parts list... It turns out the chipper I was looking at was missing the large and small pulleys, tensioner as well as the PTO shaft. It has just the rotor assembly shaft sticking out. Now I'm concerned that something is stripped; possibly the taperlock bushing because when I grab hold of the shaft and turn the chipper disk turns, but it was also possible to hold the disc still while turning the shaft.

Perhaps bad things had already happened to this one. Are parts readily available for these? What would be a fair price? I'm impressed with how sharp the hammers and knife was and the paint is very good, indicating little use.

Although I have the TPH-122, it is 300 miles away at the time. So, I can't get a look at exactly what you are describing. One suggestion I can give is this ..... call West Power Tools at 1-800-838-2523. They are very helpful and know the Mackissic product.

Or call MacKissic directly. They will be glad to talk to you. They have all the parts and have helped me out in the past. The factory is US.

Pohone and E-mail can be found at MacKissic  Inc

Thanks.
I recently contacted Mackissic and West and sent them a list of parts numbers I would probably need. Once I get the prices I'll know better how much I'm willing to bid. Glad to hear the parts are available. I was wondering if anyone else with a Mackissic has had trouble with the shaft or flywheel stripping. Maybe this chipper was abused on a tractor with too much HP. I guess it's worth a couple hundred to me given the repairs it needs.

...just heard back form West and it was confirmed the 12PT-8 was never meant to be mounted to a tractor. That suggests to me that the previous owner must have cobbled up the 3pt frame somehow.

The TPH122 is basically the 12PT unit with extra parts to make it function on a tractor. The problem is, it would cost over $1300 in parts to turn the 12pt-8 into a TPH122. That's not worth it to me.

Oh well. It's nice to see Mackissic parts are at least readily available. Guess I'll keep looking for a small used chipper.
