Box Scraper Gannon Rollover Box Blade Scraper

Thought that I would post some pics of my scraper so that they would be here for future references. I am not sure of all the sizes that are currently available, this one is an 81" cat 2, weighs in at about 1000lbs.

Rollover scrapers work very good I believe, but everybody does not agree. They need a little different technique than a std box blade for some of their uses. Most people that have them would not trade them for any other type of box blade though.

Anyway here are a few pics of the scraper in its different positions. Scraping, ripping, back filling & dragging-smoothing.

Those are nice, I borrowed one from a contractor to do some work with it and it is heavy and does move alot of dirt. What I didn't like about it is you either have the scarifiers in the ground or you are dragging dirt but you can't have both. In hard packed ground that means two passes, 1 with the teeth down the other dragging dirt. What would be awesome is Landpride makes a scarifier bar that is a toolbar with sacrifiers only on it and it is has a built in quick hitch on the back side of it to hook up something else, like a blade or rake. I think a set up with the scarifier bar and the roll over box behind it would be an awesome set up.

On the plus side for the rollover boxes is if you want to smooth out dirt or gravel without the scarifiers down you simply trip a lever to roll the pan rather than have to manually get off the tractor and move 6 or 7 teeth.

Is there any advantage of a roll over box blade compared to a box blade with hydraulic scarifers? The roll over may be slightly cheaper but then again, it could cost more. If your tractor didn't have rear hydraulics, the roll over would be an advantage. I can see more advantages to the hydraulic scarifer box blade.

The advantage with the hydraulic scarifers it can be immediately raised or lowered without getting off the tractor to do it manually. Raise implement and move hydraulic to reposition scarifer -up or down. A rollover requires raising the implement, pulling lever, lowering implement, moving forward to roll the boxblade and then engage next spot on the rollover.
I have both a hydraulic scarifer and one that uses a manual lever to just roll the scarifer up or down. The manual works or Ok but I have to stop tractor, get off, move the lever to lock it up or down and get back on tractor.

I use to have a manual scarifer box blade and it worked ok with a hydraulic top link. I could tip the blade back to keep the scarifers out of the ground and tip it forward to engage scarifers without manually lifting or lowering each scarifer. However, this results in less than optimum angle for the blade when doing fine leveling.

While I can't argue the fact of being able to engage hydraulic scarifiers while moving, ( a nice feature ) with my rollover blade, it locks into ripper position at the time of the blade being raised and the lever being pulled & released. It does need to be rolled & locked into place on the ground for the scraping & back filling positions. I never need to get off of the tractor to put the rollover box blade into any of its positions. All positioning takes only a few seconds once you get the hang of it.
