When I bought my Kubota GL4330 last May I bought off the dealer's used lot a 500 pound, 72 inch generic box scraper, thinking they are all about the same....shame on me! Fortunately my dealer will take back the used unit allowing the same amount paid. He is a big Land Pride dealer so my choice is the HR 25 or HR35 with retractable shanks, manual or hydraulic operation. The "25" weights 851 pounds and the "35" weights 931 pounds and also has a hinged rear backfill blade which can be locked down. (I'm not sure the benefits of the hinged rear backfill blade?) I have power top and tilt plus a 3rd rear port that could operate the hydraulic shanks. I'm not sure the dollar value is there in the hydraulic vs manual shank control. We live on a mountain of clay and are cleaning up a few acres of forest land. Cost difference between the two models with hydraulics is $800 for 80 pounds and a floating rear backfill blade. The unit will serve as ballast much of the time, helping offset the extra 185 pounds of the 4 in 1 fel bucket. Input on this decision would be appreciated.

how long did you have your old unit?

i ask because in that time did you find yourself raising and lowering the teeth often?

if so spring for the hyd option... if not save the pennies and buy a PHD or something else.

If i had my choice i would have gotten a hindged rear on mine, but im to cheep at this point.

The point of the hindged rear? they allow the box to dig in easyer because you dont have the rear hanging up on "taller" ground". Some dispute this based on angle of attack based on top link lenght, which is another subject.

I think you would find a hydrolic TNT MUCH more usefull than the hydrolic rippers for roughtly the same $$.

There will be many times when you just want the box without the scarfiers down and your next pass you may want just the scarfiers and you don't have to get off the tractor to do this repetiously.

Unless you are a young man, and I doubt that you are, if you can afford the box scraper with the hydraulic scarifiers, get it. If that is more $$$ than you want to spend, then maybe check out a rollover box blade. Usually priced between box blades with hydraulics and the manual scarifiers. And like the box blade with hydraulic scarifiers, with the rollover box blade you do not have to get off the tractor to make adjustments.:)

Good luck with your decision.

I appreciate the input from you all. Being of "seasoned" age I'll opt for the 850 pound model 25 with hydraulics and for go the swinging backfill blade on the heavier unit. It's not going to be used every day and this will allow funds for a thumb on my Kubota BH 90 backhoe.

Again, thanks for the comments!
