Tractor works fine for everything else I ask it to. Starts easily.

Doesn't mean something isn't binding along the PTO path though. I had a 5 foot finish mower on a YM240 that had enough power to shred 1" saplings. I had a couple of 25hp JM254s that could easily handle a 6' RFM in six inch grass.

So you've either got a tractor problem, or a mower problem. I'd start by putting the mower behind another tractor to try and see which direction your troubleshooting should proceed.

Have you tried it with any other PTO driven implements (tiller, rotary cutter)?

I have a TC33d with 27pto h.p. and i have a 6 foot NH finish mower and have no problems. I will say that cutting it just a half inch higher will make a big difference. Try raising the blades a little and take less grass. I still think it should mow no problem.

Something's not right...I mow with a 6' Woods RFM pulled with a NH 1720 which rates at 23.5 PTO HP. I pull that sucker in 8th gear with no problems. I do mow high. I would put the mower behind another tractor in the same HP range as your Oliver and see what happens. I've got a feeling that the old Oliver is not getting enough power to your unit or you're trying to mow too much off at one time.

I took the finish mower off and am working on finishing everything with the rotary cutter. No sweat. Deep as you want. Doesn't even blink.

That's good news...it means your Oliver is OK.

So, that takes us to the mower...
I think your gearbox is bound up. Is there any lubricant in the gearbox of the mower?
Also, roll the mower over. Try moving the blades. They should be stiff but you should be able to turn the blades and belt.
There should be some play in the belt (figure 3/8's at the longest section between the pulleys).

Does the mower have 'high-lift' mower blades on it? I had a set that was so 'high-lift' that it took a lot of horsepower to even turn the mower at full speed (made a heck of a leaf blower though) Those blades were replaced with regular blades and all was well, with a very slight decrease in quality of cut.

The blades have some lift on them, I dont' know about high lift, but they've got some lift. I'm going to pull the belt off first and check each spindle, then the gearbox.

I checked out my 7' Woods spin effort this afternoon. With the pto freewheeling, I can rotate the 3 blades, gearbox and pto shaft without any strain using just my little finger. I have 2 slugs in the gage wheels giving me a regular lawn cut grass level. Wings are up on the blades. I can march into any field with this setup without touching the governor with my JD1070 at 540pto rpm mid-range 2nd gear.
There is no "I" in team, but there is a "Me" if you want to jumble it up a bit...
