I have a John Deers LX4 Rotary cutter that I am planning on trading in on a new John Deere 5 foot rotary cutter. Supposedly john deere now sells Frontier, so it would be a 5 foot Frontier with a slip clutch, laminated wheel, and guards on the front only. What should it cost as far as trading up? My LX4 was new about 3-4 yrs ago when I bought my JD 2210. There is absolutely no damage to my LX4 and its been stored inside so there is NO rust anywhere.

I got a quote from the "Stealership" today and they want $995.00 and my used LX4 to trade up. Supposedly the unit lists for $1,471.00 and they want to charge $239.00 to set it up.

I'm confident that I can set the dang thing up and save the $239!
So we'd be looking at like $750 for the trade. (I'd do the set-up) What do you guys think about this price?

Also are the Frontier models decent, or are they cheapos.....This LX4 i have is built really really well, but my 2520 is begging for a 5 footer! :D

Suggestions?

Deadman, can't believe you are in the same position I am in. I almost thought I wrote the thread. I also have the lx4 and just love it but, my 955 rear tracks are just too wide. I need a 5 footer also. I hope there are some recommendations out there. We might have to bite the bullet on this one.

The Frontier RC1048 is a different design and, while I haven't seen one, is probably a step down in terms of quality. The LX cutters were among the best light duty cutters made (I own an LX6). I would be inclined to stay with your LX4, but if you really want to get a 5' I would resell the LX4 yourself (ebay, this board, whatever) and buy a Woods, Rhino or Bushhog 5' cutter. Or, since you are apparently really easy on cutters, I would consider a second tier brand and save some $$$. The "Farm Force" stuff I've seen at TSC looks ok, better than KK.

The price with trade-in sounds too high, and for what it's worth I doubt they will give you the option to set it up yourself.

I thought that WOODS made the Frontier cutters for JD?
I can't really say that I'm all that easy on the cutter, but I use my head before I just slam it into rocks, stumps, etc!

Is this a decnt deal that my dealer is giving me? I really don't know.
A huge problem for me is that I live in a pretty remote area, so selling this myself is nearly impossible without SHIPPING!

I have heard claims of Woods making Frontier cutters before. I am skeptical since Frontier just dropped Woods as a maker for box blades. But, who knows? The warranty page in the owner's manual will say who the manufacturer is. I would be *really* interested to find out. Bear in mind that Woods makes premium and econo lines, and while their premium (brushbull) line is excellent, their econo line (Heritage) is nothing special.

If you compare the woods and frontier on JD's web site, the Frontier Superior in many ways to the woods brushbull, and they're both superior to the cheapo woods model. But the Bushbull weighs like 30 Lbs more than the Frontier, and the cheapo woods is like 100 Lbs lighter than both of them.

load o' crap

setup fee, what a joke
go assemble it, you know they get money from the manufactuer to assemble it.
What a joke, man i'd walk from that stealership as fast as my little legs could carry me, find a good dealership.
a 5' mower light duty rotary cutter should not cost $1500
period.

I couldn't find any direct comparison of the two cutters; maybe I didn't look hard enough.

I'm sure the RC1060 is perfectly fine. However, it is definitely a different and simpler design than the LX5 it replaces. I think JD decided there was more profit in outsourcing a decent light cutter than in building their own really nice light cutter. Note that JD still makes their own, Deere brand, medium and heavy duty cutters.

I think your used LX4 is worth a LOT more than $250 if it's in the shape you describe. I also don't think the RC1060 is worth $1471 or whatever the dealer seems to want from you. I might pay $1000-1100 for an RC1060, without any trade-in. Let me state I don't actually know what they are selling for at local dealers.

IMHO, based on owning one piece of Frontier equipment and inspecting dozens more, it is always decently built equipment, but not always top notch. Since it doesn't sound like you're getting a good deal, I would look at other brands before you buy/trade.
