I finally picked up a timing light with a built in tach so I could check my high speed rpms and adjust them per this thread

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/atvs-utility-vehicles/155957-rtv500-throttle-adjustments.html

My unit was set to 3650 rpms, turns out the throttle cable was stretched a bit and the butterfly wasn't hitting the high speed screw stop. After a quick adjustment there I was up to 3750 and the rest was adjusting the screw to get the rpms up to 4070....(4K +/-100 was recommended) While I was there I decided to back my servo off just a whisker, when I hit steep hills my unit would bog at first then eventually start pulling again. After the rpm and servo adjustment it's even better on power.

It's great having all the information that this forum provides at your fingertips.

I'm not confident enough to attempt these adjustments myself. I'll end up whacking everything out of adjustment.

It's easy if you have a way to check the rpms...you need something with an inductive pickup that you can hook to a plug wire like a timing light. The actual adjustments took less than 15 minute total and the power was noticeable right away.

It's pretty easy if you keep track of what you're doing...A tach equipped timing light is a must though.

Pay attention to the adjustments that you made so that you can always go back to ground zero...No big deal, believe me.

One of these days I will probably attempt it. I've bookmarked the discussion threads where this has been discussed. I agree the unit is underpowered but right now hauling firewood around and doing general tasks the power *suffices*. Nothing to brag about though, like timswi has previously stated........its almost embarrassing.

Mine always did great in low range...high range was the problem, especially going up long hills. Those couple of adjustments really helped out.
