Thanks for all the info. Now I need to look into the laws of the over 30 mph and under 30 mph. I want to cruise down the road w/ triangle and I believe it is illegal if they go over 30 MPH because they are no longer slow moving. I'm going to look at the Kubota 900 in camo. I got a few prices and the lowest was 13,499 in camo w/brushguard standard. I would like to buy out of state to save that 8.75% sales tax. The reason I need engine braking is I checked the grade on one of my trails and my Bushnell rangefinder put it at 17 degrees. It is pretty steep and gets a little hairy even on my quad.

i have never checked the grade on some of the logging roads i work on, but just by guessing some have to be 30 degrees or more. i would even say 45 in some areas i have been on and that is if 0 is flat and 90 is straight up and down like a cliff. the rtv does great!

I think the Kubota has it for engine braking. My roads in the woods aren't steep like some of you guys but still enough that breaks would be a good idea. Hauling with my 900 i don't believe i've ever used the breaks. If your not payig attention when you let off the throttle pedal you might wear the steering wheel, some say its to much hold back but i like it.
In my opinion the kubota has a built in "Jake" break that works better than my 2010 International road tractor!
Here's a couple pic's of my loads .. .John

JPM I really like those bedsides with the axe mount. Do you have any other photos of that setup?

We own three Yamahas, engine brakeing is the best in the business..

The Grizzly 700FI and the Rhino have weak unreliable engine braking, there is a one way bearing which fails often, google it, and my vehicles have done 3300 hours and nearly 5700. You can modify the vehicles to improve it with an aftermarket kit (something about lugs from memory), but i resent having to spend more out on vehicles that should do the job from day 1. The issue happens if you use trailers, I doubt you'll notice it, just driving the vehicle round.

The only parts that fail on these vehicles are Stator Coils and Engine Braking for typical farm use.

The engines are bullet proof, nearly 6000 hours, no rebuild, that said it does use oil now, but always starts, even if the plug needs cleaning once a week, and they get used 2-3 hours a day minimum. The differentials, and drive shafts are as well.

I've only used a Polaris Ranger 400 and now my Kubota RTV-X900 and the Ranger drove me crazy as it would free-wheel down our hills and I had to ride the brakes. The brakes were great, but with a load in the back it made it difficult not to heat the brakes up. Now with my RTV I hardly use the brakes at all! I love the HST transmission - I knew I would as I've had a Kubota B7800 with a HST transmission for 12 years.
For creeping up and down steep hills I highly recommend the Kubota RTV series.

I'm real happy with the way the transmission braking works on my RTV. I have read were some of them work to well though and well about put them though the windshield. For me mines about perfect.

I have the Deere 855D...engine braking is quite good...in fact, sometimes too good! My guess is the diesel models (in general...not just Deere) do better due to the higher compression ratios of the engines.

But a real comparison would require side by side testing of multiple brands...all we're doing here is providing anecdotal evidence.

this mite sound nuts but the ranger has to have gas to keep the clutch engaged for the engine brake to work .
